Heater core help....

Has anyone just clamped the hose for the heater core? I just don't have the time to attend to it. I tried the liquid heater core fix-in-a-bottle, that lasted for about 2 months.

Take the hoses off and bypass it with a piece of tube and connect them together and block off the tube on the heater core.

Has anyone put a ball valve there? I was thinking about piecing something together from the plumbing section at Home Depot. Eventually I'll tear apart the dash and replace the heater core, but if the heater core blows again it would be nice to just shut that valve and still be able to drive a long distance home.
