Anyone Remember the Rat Patrol Show

This show from the early 60s is probably what gave me the 'jeep sickness'! That and the fact that I learned to drive in an old CJ3 flattie

In the show they used MB Jeeps to ass ra*e German supply lines in the African theater during WWII.

Check out the show intro:
YouTube - The Rat Patrol Intro theme

Hell ya, Rat Patrol baby...... of course I watched the re-runs because I'm "only" 38 - we "played" Rat Patrol while in Desert Storm, all the way to the goggles and scarf across the face to keep the sand out of your throat. We had a blast.... when it didn't totally suck. It sucked more than it was fun.....

Hogans Heroes....
F Troop
Black Sheep
MASH
COMBAT!

and recently - The Unit - it kicks ass.....

It was cool... we only had one TV (and no X-Box - WTF!!!) and pops was in charge of programming so we got to watch those shows - and the cool westerns with the old time heroes loke Brunson, Marvin, Mr. Wayne, Eastwood......

I am glad that I had no choice now.... it was great stuff.

Of course I was the "remote control" and "signal finder" first class.

My kids are spoiled rotten.... think I will make them pick some weeds out of the landscaping tomorrow morning......

Damn I loved Black Sheep. Hell, I did a report on on Pappy in the 6th grade...I was a little freaking war hawk with a Marine and Navy family! Hell, I have a model of a Corsair on top of my fridge.

Cavanaugh Flight Museum has a flyable F4 Corsair. I've spent lots of time walking around that baby. Its huge when you see it in person!

Christofer George also had a short soap on tv-something about sailing to hawaii with an all girl crew

He was also a friend of John Wayne and made three (?) movies with him-El Dorado, Diablo and ???

And the Corsair took great britain to teach us how to land it on a Carrier, you couldn't see the landing strip when you dropped down to landing speed

I've got all the Black Sheep tv shows on tape, there's one with two stainless steel p-38s--fantastic

Hell yeah! I still play that song in my head doing the sand stuff in the arroyos down south. I've got the hat, but I haven't found a comfortable pair of goggles yet, still looking. The guy that played the bad guy is still on some soap or another.

Truthfully and historically , the show portrayed the Americans as the "Rat Patrol" when in fact during WWII it was the British who were the "Rat Patrol" using lend lease Jeeps against Rommel's Afrika Corps. Long before the US was involved in the conflict.

The show was inspired by and loosely modelled on the New Zealand/British/Rhodesian Long Range Desert Group, which used modified trucks armed with machine guns as their transport through the treacherous desert terrain. The title of the program refers to the nicknames given to some of the British Commonwealth forces in the North African campaign (Rats of Tobruk or Desert Rats). Consequently, at the time of original telecast many English viewers took offense at the dominance of American characters on the program, the result being that the show was pulled from British television.

Read "Popski's Private Army." Still loved the show. TV's not supposed to be historically accurate or accurate in general, just watch the news sometime and you'll see what I mean.
