what is your winch rated at?

so I am looking at buying a winch I have a few in mind (dont worry I wont start that war) I am simply looking to see what you guys are running capacity wise. I have a 08 X stock other then the rubi wheels and tires for now. I know the old 1.5x the weight of the vehicle rule, just wanted some opinions. I am thinking about running either a 8k or 10k winch but I dont know if the 10k is too much overkill. Keep in mind within my circle of friends if ANYONE gets stuck somewhere they call the guys with jeeps to get them out. I actually pulled an old full sized bronco out that was buried to his frame using a ram 1500 without the option of a winch. thoughts?

thanx and stay safe

8k will do just fine.... 10K is better if money is no object.

I have a Warn 8k on mine and am very happy. Has gotten me out of more than a few jams.

Even used it to flip a vehicle over, in tandem with another one for stability but it hardly strained.

Good point P,

There is a good write up about winches in this month's JP magazine. One of many reasons to pick that thing up and read it. The Mile Marker scored very high when compared to all the rest. And the price ain't bad either.

I've got a Smittybilt 8K and it works fine. Slow, but it has always worked when I've asked it to. If and when I replace it I'll be getting a Superwinch EPi9.0.

Champion 10,000 works each time I needed it! A bit slower than a Warn but has been working for over 2 years so far and has bin under water a bunch of times and not one problem!

This is what I have. I have had a couple different 8k winches in the past.

I have never been happier with a winch then I am with this one. The LOW amp draw makes a world of difference

T-Max Comp Series 9k. Works fine and even with the solenoid pack mounted on top of it is pretty lo profile. Added in cab controls also.

Can't say enough good things about synthetic line, I wouldn't have a winch without it.

I've got the same SuperWinch EPi 9.0 -- have only had to use it once so far, worked great. External brake: great for synthetic line.

Tabor 9k. 9000lbs. I've used it several times and it's never let me down. A little on the slow side but it pulls good. Can't go wrong with the price tag either. Sold by Warn and comes with a Warn warranty.

I have also used the TAbor and was somewhat happy with it. Never let me down but it certainly takes a lot of energy to pull with it. I would have to rev it up on harder pulls.

Anyway, what I wanted to say was...unless they changed it, it does not come with the same warranty as the Warn branded winches.

Yep agreed on the pull. Last time I used it, I used my ProCal to control RPM's while I pulled. I pulled 3 rigs up in the span of an hour or so and the Tabor worked great. That's the most load I've put on it in that short of time. I pulled a LWB Rover that was in mud over the axles and it was begging for more juice.

You're right about the warranty. What I should have said is it is warrantied by Warn but is not subject to the same rules. It's a 1 year limited instead of the typical limited lifetime.

Oh sorry, missread.

One thing to note as well is that a lot of the parts in the Tabor are the same as the warn so many parts are interchangeable making rebuilding easy

Superwinch Epi 9k, it has been a great winch, and right in the middle cost wise...

gotta agree with Scott, price, low amp draw, speed, line capacity (125') and a snatch block and control cable as part of the package led to my choice of the Superwinch epi9.0. with the snatch block you're talking about 18,000 lbs. pull. low amp draw saves your battery in difficult, technical winching situations.
