Rear diff fluid colour?

Hi Guys!

After 12,000 Km (7500 Miles) what would you consider a normal colour for the rear diff fluid?

Had an oil change today, had them check the diff levels, the tech was concerned about the colour of the oil for a Jeep with only 12000km on it! Abd after i saw it so was I. It was a solid dark charcoal gray/black colour, look just like the gear oil I pulled out of My MG after 110,000km and 25 years of use. unlike the front diff fluid which was a crisp clear golden green colour.

Mine at 3,000 miles looked like dark, and crap. I'm glad I changed it out asap, just feel better having mobil 1 in my axles now.

When I changed my fluid the first time... it was as black as charcoal only had 30 000 km on it... changed all my fluids to Amsoil, extended drain... Got ARB dif covers and check them regularly... the color seems to stay clean and the magnet has no shavings on it... I guess the Amsoil is doing it's job...

If you have a rear limited slip Diff. the friction additive that is in the gear lube could cause the rear fluid to have a different color and smell then the front.
