fairlead height

I'm building a bumper and will post pic's in the how to when I'm done but I need to know how high the opening for the cable/rope is from the bottom of the winch. Will 3.5 inches be enough? From what I have seen it looks like the fairlead is just about an inch above the base of the winch, is that correct?

The winch cable spools from the bottom, so just line up the fairlead opening half way between the lower edge of the drum and the base of the winch and you will be good. The bottom of the opening is usually 1" or so from the base of the winch.

Remember that most winches have the drum offset to the drivers side, so the fairlead opening in the bumper needs to be offset too.
