Hog Hunting...

Well, in 2 weeks I'm headed back to Texas for another wild hog hunt.
I went down with 3 friends about 2 years ago and had a real nice time.
The folks in TX are real nice and sure know how to make BBQ!

I have several ARs of various calibers but despite that I'm taking my Savage '99 again.
If you read my post "The Old Woman Died" you know the rifle I'm talking about.

I'll be the only one not taking an AR to hunt with.
One is using a 6.8SPC( a good hog killing round)and a .300 Blackout AR-pistol.
One is taking a 7.62x39 and the other is using his .223.
Some say the .223 is too light for hogs and it is certainly on the bottom of the spectrum but what it lacks in punch it makes up for in accuracy.
Bullet placement with hogs is pretty important as is a good bullet design.
There are a lot of good hog loads on the market right now.
On our last trip my 16 yr old nephew killed a 150# boar with a .223 using Hornady Superperformance GMX rounds.
1 shot was all it took....

Mmmmm BACON!

Hope you kill one or two or three Frank. Pigs began appearing on my property about two years ago. I usually hunt them with my Ruger .44 mag carbine. Very seldom to they run far. I'm using Speer Lawman HP's.

No such thing as a bad round for pigs. Shoot 'em all!

Seriously, I've never had a problem with a .223 using whatever ammo is rolling around in the bed of the truck.

Hog hunting is always fun!

Sounds like a blast (no pun intended). Pig hunting is awesome. Hunting, pest control, and BACON! All in one. Haven't gone myself, but have talked with friends about looking into a trip. Good luck, have fun and be safe.

I've looked at those Leupold Pig Plex scopes.
Marketing aside they seem like a really good scope for the money.

Well, I made it back alive.
We took 7 hogs.
I was in the brush tracking a wounded hog my cousin shot when a 90# boar charged me.
Shot it in the face with my AR-15 pistol.
Really pissed it off, but at least it turned broadside so I could put it down.
Man we had fun...

This was the 164# boar I shot.
1 shot from my Savage '99 .308 and it was DRT.

what part of texas?

I'm using a custom built AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel. Kicks like a 223.... puts them down like a 308

Hey guys,

It's been a really long time since I've really posted much here - three (3) years, actually. (That's when I got rid of my JK for my Raptor.) Since then, I've changed careers. Twice-ish!

In my new career, though, I've come to know the guys at Last Shadow (LastShadow | Texas Helicopter Hunting | The Best In Texas) in Temple, Texas really well. Barrett is a good friend of mine, and so is the pilot, Richard. If you guys are ever interested in doing a helicopter hog hunt in Texas, let me know, and I'll get you in touch with the right people. The best part about Last Shadow is, they fly MD500s...! (Civilian version of the Little Bird.) You get to where you're going to hunt significantly faster than with anyone flying a Robinson R22/R44 (typical cruise to hunting grounds is 130 knots.)

I'm not associated with these guys in any way other than being friends with them, and, when I have time, they allow me to fly right-seat as the Tactical Flight Safety Officer.
