Gotta pimp my new safe...

Sturdy Safe makes awesome chit.

It was time for a new safe, so like any good gun owner I headed to the local outdoor emporium and took a look at their line of safes, this line made by Liberty. I also ran across some Winchesters and Brownings. All good stuff, I was ready to buy, but decided to sleep on it and do some research.

Turns out a whole bunch of the standard-issue safes really aren't particularly secure at all. Most of them can be punched through with a standard fire ax and if they can be laid down on their back, it's all over and they can be pried open in a couple of minutes (there are impressive Youtube vids of this stuff). Most of them are designed more for catching the eye of the gun owner with glossy colors and center spin handles.

So I came across the big names...Graffunder, Brown, AmSec, Fort Knox....all great but I didn't want to spend 5k+on a safe. That led me eventually to Sturdy Safe...serious security at a fair price. I learned so much about safes on their site it was ridiculous. It ain't pretty, but nobody short of a vault cracker is getting into the thing. It's also 1300 lbs and bolted to the floor.

Check out their site, I highly recommend them...

Yeah, thanks again brother.
Order completed went with Sturdy.
36W x 27D x 60H 7 Gauge outer shell
With:
Fire Liner
Upgrade from 16 to 10 gauge inner steel liner
Key in dial
Interior #2 with side
free reinforced bolt down holes drilled (exposes the holes for the steel tubing guides)
Free decal pack
Free drop in garage
Build time 4 weeks
Travel time 7 days

When I built the safe on their web page I got a total of $3,207.
So I called them to place my order(got this thing about using a human to answer any questions etc and to keep them employed)
I read down the options listed above. She took all the info and said the total with a discount would be $3,217. I said "the total on your web page was $3,207? She said hmm they usually beat their web page price. I asked if they offered military discounts but they said their prices are already bottom. So I said either way I'm buying this safe ma'am let me know what it's going to cost me.
Sat on hold for 20 seconds and she came back and said $3167.

I asked if people requested pictures of their builds? She said all the time.
She's going to have them send some pics of the build to my phone as they progress. Cool.

I did so much research on gun safes last year at this time it made my head spin. Up to that point, I didn't have a good method of securing my firearms at all and since I'd bought an AR15, I wanted to make sure everything was secure.

I came to the conclusion that the best way to buy a safe it to select a price point and get the most for your money. My initial price point was $3k, until I really started thinking about it and dropped it down. My reasoning was that currently, my guns were not safe. I wanted to secure the guns, have a decent fire rating, and not spend a fortune.

I ended up buying a Browning Sporter SP23 for under $1200. It sits in the back corner of my basement (deepest part) with sides on concrete walls and it's bolted to the floor. If a thief can defeat my house alarm, my dog, and then spend at least an hour to get it open, then they got me.

I purposely didn't get a large safe because I look at the Sporter as a starter safe and don't want to move a monster when I retire in 10 years. At that time, I'll spend more and buy a larger safe.

Pics coming, but don't get all excited. It's a big gray granite-finished box with some cheap tramp-stamp decals applied to it.

I got the 42w x 72h x 27d, with the fire insulator, through-bolt holes with sleeves, hole for a dehumidifier, free tramp decals, and the #2 interior config.

I thought the safe movers were going to kill me after getting that thing into the house...and that's with a walk-out on acerage. I'm not sure it's coming with me if I ever move, I may have to sell it or include it in the house.
