First AR build

So i bought a REALLY nice AR about a year ago... and then i sold it. i didn't build it. i didn't have any appreciation for it. i didn't know the inner workings. etc.

so anyway, i'm doing a budget "getting to know you" build. I have a polymer lower that my buddy gave me. it's new so it might need a little love in some places.

i bought a PSA upper with a chrome lined barrel and decent BCG.

and i bought a PSA Magpul MOE lower build kit...

just a few questions. when assembling the lower. should i oil any of the parts as they go together?

any suggestions on what to use for lube? i've always just used good ol rem oil.

Thanks guys.

Light coat on the trigger hinge area and sear, very light wipe on the buffer and spring, and that's about it. Not a lot going on down there.

The upper is what likes to run a bit wet.

That setup is a good start. My first was a DPMS Oracle, only because I paid $560 and I couldn't build it for that.

will do.

here's the optic i ordered:

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index...green-dot.html

It had decent reviews. I know it's not a high end optic, but it'll be fine for what i'm going to do. and it's kinda cool it came with a magnifier

my next build will have high end stuff on it. this one was just to learn on.

total invested with the optic, 2 windowed mags, and everything else is $630. my buddy did give me the lower though. but they're not very expensive if you're adding it up in your head.

I built one of those NF lowers over the winter. Used the PSA LPK with the ACS-L stock. Same upper as you. The lower still needs a little sanding, the takedown pin is very tight and the upper locks in at the rear. But, I guess that helps with accuracy? It did get smoother as I put the first mag through it to test everything and break-in the barrel, so I'm gonna hold off and see if it really needs any more sanding.

my buddy bought 2 during the scare. he built one and gave me the other. he said the same thing. he had to sand around the mag release button.

i figure no big deal. i can always swap the lower out too. this was a budget build anyway. just to get the feel for building one...

it's pretty addictive though.

with my m1a, I did 1 round, punch the bore, 1 round punch the bore, up to 5 rounds, then 2 rounds punch the bore up to 10 rounds, then 3 rounds punch the bore up to 30 rounds. Some say you don't need to break in the barrell some say you do. I did, figured it couldn't hurt. The key is to not get the barrell too hot during the first 50 rounds.

How come you don't have it together yet?

Got the lower assembled. The poly lower needed a little love with a file to get perfect. Especially on the magazine catch.

Now just waiting for the upper. The optic. The mags and the ammo.

Come on psa. Get that upper out the door!

It wasn't bad. had to do a decent amount of filing to make the mag catch work. but other than that, no huge issue.

magnetic parts holder tray was a huge win with all the detents and springs.

Nice looking AR. I had to do the same on a polymer lower receiver. Mag release was really tight as were the takedown and pivot pins and safety selector. I launched the pivot pin, detent spring, the first time that I tried to install it. Fortunately I found it.

Just curious, what was your build cost?

When building an AR, is it the upper or lower that you have to buy from an FFL dealer?

The main thing I don't care for is the optic. That 4moa dot is just not conducive to accuracy. I'm a fan of the EOTEC xps 2 or 3 even for minute of man accuracy. Now either of those will cost ya about as much as you have in your present gun but are well worth it. Don't get me wrong. I'm not a fan of high dollar AR mods for the most part and tend to poke fun at folks that spend unnecessary money on overpriced parts just because of a name and never shoot enough to achieve their potential. If you ever try one you'll understand quickly. Other than that I would suggest you tweak the trigger and then shoot that thing to death. I would love to hear a good report on a polymer lower for a change. As much as I shoot and as hard as I am on my guns, I just haven't been able to bring myself to try one first hand. Put 15 or 20k through that thing and lemme know how it stands up.

i would have done a metal lower but my buddy gave me this one. It was a pain since i had to file and sand to make everything work. and the take down pins are still really tight.

i agree, the optic is cheap. but i am significantly better with it than with the irons. and really i'm just using to for fun. I'm not a huge fan of the eotechs. i'd prefer an aimpoint. but this thing was built on a budget, just to learn the platform. and overall i was getting nice groupings at 75 and 100 yards. enough that i'm comfortable with what's on there. I just need to add a rear flip up iron.

Watch palmetto state armory for some of their "blem" lowers. I have seen them as low as 49.00.
