My Cluster isn't working properly

So a while back my compass wouldn't register but I was doing some radio work and had the compass module unplugged and I chalked it up to that. A month or so later my Average Fuel Economy quit working and the DTE was stuck at 255. I noticed this around the time that my local dealer fixed a recall so I thought maybe it was related. They checked it out and said it was a bad cluster.

Today they replaced it and got the same thing. They are blaming it on my aftermarket parts (I have a OEM interface and some stereo equipment in there). The funny part is this stuff has been in there long before the cluster problems started. That's typical of a dealer when they can't find the problem. This place was nice enough to warranty my two year old ripped top so I'm not complaining. I'll take what I can get.

Now the service writer said that there was a module behind the radio that feeds the cluster and the compass and maybe it was unplugged. I did have the radio out a while back so this is possible.

Is anyone aware of a module behind the radio? I'm going to take the dash apart this weekend but wanted to get a heads up before I go diving in.

Thanks!

I didn't recall a module behind the radio, but its very possible, even if while moving things around you could have pulled on some wires and loosened something up.

Also make sure you don't need any updates. Check out all of the TSB's that would be related.

Are you getting any codes? Can you pull OBD codes? Even without a mil you might have stored codes in there.

Just a thought, my friends 08 started going out ie wipers wouldnt shut off, cluster wasnt working properly, temp guage, average fuel not working ect. turned out that water had gotten behind the dash and shorted it out, from his soft top leaking. Dealer replaced the soft top and dash cluster.

Well they left the new cluster in there. The AVG Fuel still is blank and the DTE is stuck on 255. The compass is backwards (it says N when you are faced South).

I'm going to pull it apart and see what I might have done. I'll post results if I find anything.

Thanks for the feedback.

So you took it to a dealership, and the didn't fix it, but verified (supposedly) that the cluster is good.???? And left you with it not working?

Just doesn't seem like good business to me. Best of luck getting it sorted out, let us know how it goes.

True but this dealership covered my ripped two year old top under warranty so I didn't feel like arguing.

Since I did do some work on the Jeep, it's possible I did something but it doesn't make much sense to me. It all happened around when they did the recall.

Typical dealer, blame the aftermarket parts installed but I'll figure it out. Their solution was to disconnect all the aftermarket stuff but I didn't want them messing with that.

All that is installed is an amplifier and a OEM integration device. Nothing that would mess with the cluster.

Yea, I understand that.

Not a bad idea to disconnect one aftermarket thing at a time and see if the problem clears up.. (I know -- standard trouble shooting)
And just like with computers, see if any connections got bumped loose.

Best wishes.
