CB HELP!

Just Installed my Cobra 75. I called my neighbor who has a hand held and he can hear me,but I cant hear him. Any Ideas ? Its very aggravating and have double check all the connection. I thought the antenna might not be grounded correctly but I would think I would not be able to be Heard.

Maybe your neighbors handheld isnt really transmitting even with that sometime handhelds don't work that great because some manufacturers turn the wattage down less than 4 watts in them to conserve battery power. Depending on where you live might listen around to see if there are people in your area that have a mobile or base unit and ask for a radio check. Just some other ideas....

Teraflex 4" Lift with 8 Flexarms - Mickey Thompson Classic Locks - 35" Goodyear MTR with Kevlar - Shrockworks Mid Width Front Bumper - Shrockworks Full Width Rear Bumper/Tire Carrier - SkidRow Oil/Tranny skid plate - Rock Hard 4x4 JK Evap Canister Skid Plate - Coast Front and Read Driveshaft - Teraflex Front/Rear Differential Covers - Superchip Flashpaq - Mile Marker 9500 - KC SlimLights - ARB on-board air/CB/Ham radio - Yukon 5.13 - Sleeved and Gussets

Make sure you properly installed your antenna mount. The center conductor cannot be grounded to anything or it will cause your whole jeep to become the antenna. Here is a link to show what we are running in Hawaii from Richie Rich.
http://www.stu-offroad.com/cb/cb_install-3.htm

It talks about ensuring you have a good ground on the base but keep the center clear of metal. That is why that small plastic washer is required to be installed correctly.

Hope this helps.

Can you switch to one of the NOAA weather bands (last button on the right) and hear anything. To rule out a bad speaker.

Ask him also to move around. 100 ft. or so from where he's transmitting now. Not necessarily closer to you, just a different position, sometimes it helps. Especially with a low power hand held unit. Think of your cellphone signal strength bars, "can you hear me now?" (Before some smart a$$ mentions it, I know it's different freq./technology etc.)

Also are you near any buildings? Normally you're better not being near one. But for some reason when I park really close to my garage door. I pick up more chatter. CB reception is weird like that.

My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to 99 a can. That's almost $7.00 in dog money.

I took of my rear tire and Tail lamp assembly and I mounted the antenna bracket directly to the Jeep, could this be the problem?

no exp with CB's except my 76 (which works btw ) but plenty of RF exp. The fact that you can transmit but not receive is a strange one, usually the Tx is the thing people have problems with. X2 on checking your neighbors handhelds Tx. If you have a wattmeter and some connectors you can hook one up to his antenna port and see if he's even putting out enough power. x2 on his location, 4-5W handhelds do not like being indoors if thats where he was. From my exp, getting no Rx would not be your antenna. Rx will not be effected much by antenna tuning or grounding issues. Hell you can receive RF with a fork and a tin can, or a stripped piece of RG58.

So that leaves the (EDIT speaker) or your neighbors Tx. Can you hear static with the squelch all the way down? that would rule out the (EDIT speaker). That's all the help I can offer.

Did you run a ground wire from the tailgate to the frame?

you need to verify that it is actually your radio with the problem by getting a different one to transmit to you.

I sounds like you are receiving the "carrier" signal, but not the "voice" signal. My bet is the handheld is not transmitting properly.

2:1 isnt a very good SWR but you still should be able to receive transmissions. Reflected power only really effects your transmit power. Can you hear static at all?

Bummer, trying some web searches only came back with a few obvious things. Make sure the switch is on CB not PA, make sure you have 13.8vdcm a lower 11.8-12.5vdc could cause problems, other than that, I dunno what to tell ya. Might just be a bad unit that needs to be replaced.

Call Cobra's tech desk, maybe something is set wrong and they can walk you through it.

From their website "For questions regarding Cobra Electronics and its products, please contact customer service Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. CST or the automated help desk, which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (773) 889-3087."
