7 way trailer harness: Skidplate?

I finally got my new rear bumper installed (Genright Aluminum) and was disappointed to find there is not sufficient space behind the bumper to mount the Mopar 7-way trailer harness plug that I had installed. I was hoping to flush it into the bumper, but between the cross member & the JK recessed storage pocket in the sheetmetal above, there just isn't enough clearance in a space where the Genright bumper is flat.

So I was thinking about building a small skidplate for my 7-way connector. I was thinking a piece of 3/16" steel bent to follow the contour of the trailer hitch (and welded to that hitch) would prevent me from tearing this connector off while on the trail.

Has anyone done anything like this? I searched & came up empty.

Doc, does that protrude into the storage puka under the rear floor, or into a dead space?
