Looking for ways to secure a 17" laptop

It's starting to get warm here and I'm preparing to take my '11 JK factory hard top to a Bestop Bikini combo. One concern I have is securing my laptop. I'm looking for ideas.

I've looked at the Tuffy projects (good writeup on the forum here too) but I have problems with both the laptop box and the cargo area tray. I have a 17" MacBook Pro, and the Tuffy photos all show a 15" Dell that only has maybe 1" clearance left over so I don't think it will fit (plus they don't specify a laptop size anyway). No to mention I don't see a good place to secure the box anyway.

The cargo area is tough because I often carry my dogs around back there and I'd hate to invest in something that I would be constantly removing.

That leaves me with your basic laptop security cable. At this point that's looking like my best option, but those are really just deterrents - and let's face it, I need to be confident when I park the jeep and go grab a bite that my stuff will still be there.

Love to hear some real-world options. Thanks!

I take mine with me. If I know I'll be going someplace I can't take my backpack, I either leave it at work or home.

I even think of the Tuffy products as mere deterrents.

Jeep + Security doesn't exist to me. I don't leave anything in I'll be too upset over losing.

To get something that would work, would likely need to be custom. How thick is a laptop security cable? Nothing a quick "snip" with the right tool wouldn't leave you out ~$1500.

x3.....those laptop cables are merely for when you are in hotels or locking it home/office to keep someone from easily walking out of your room/office with it.

Best bet is a laptop bag/backpack/"satchel" to carry it in if you need to take it with you.....otherwise look at getting an iPad/iTouch/mini-notebooks/smartphone if you need a computer on the go!

I have seen that but it doesn't look like it would fit my laptop (17").

It would be easy enough to find out whether it fits or not...

Exterior Dimensions: 18 5/16" W x 5 1/4" D x 14 1/4" H

Interior Dimensions : 15 3/4" W x 2 13/16" D x 11 1/2" H

Make sure the 17" size you're referring to is not just the diagonal screen size!
With a long neck padlock, you can secure this with a full 3/8" thick braided steel cable.

MacBook Pro 17" is:

Height:
0.98 inch (2.50 cm)
Width:
15.47 inches (39.3 cm)
Depth:
10.51 inches (26.7 cm)

so it should fit. Just have to figure out where to secure the box.
