INSTALL help with Cobra 75 for 2 dr JK

I am close to returning this CB kit from Right channel radio. I have followed all the help and cannot get a swr reading below 9. I did have to make an antenna mount due to the Tereflex mount did not fit with my aftermarket rear tire carrier. However I used plate steel painted it and made sure it was grounded. I tested it with my voltage meter and it was fine. I have also made sure the little cb box is grounded under my glove box. I made sure my SWR meter is hooked up correctly. I am at a loss here. Any tricks or anything I could have missed. By the way the antenna is mounted on the TOP of my bumper carrier and I have about a foot or so of antenna above my soft top.

I did try to use a cheap little walkie talkie from midland to see if I can hear myself on the COBRA CB and nothing!

Anything would help.
Thanks

I have the same one and the only issue I had was in properly grounding. I wish I had more info but mine works great with no issues.

IMO it has to be something with way you mounted the antenna and ground. I am using the teraflex mount, firestick 4ft antenna and without adjustment got a 1.1 swr reading.

When I first installed mine using the Teraflex mount on the factory tire carrier it worked great and could talk half way across the island (at least it seemed pulling in some guys about 10 miles away). Since I put on the aftermarket tire carrier and putting the mount right on the door, I can receive everything but can't push over a vehicle away from me. I know it's in the grounding and will look at putting a grounding strap from the mount to the frame soon.

Will let you know how that works out.

My antenna is grounded, but my control box is not. I literally just ziptied it up out of way under my dash and I was able to hit 1.2 SWR without tuning of the antenna.

if your swr reading is out of wack it has to be something with antenna or ground. Maybe post up in FL see if anyone has 75 you can test in your jeep but i dont think it is the unit

I'm with him. I doubt it's the unit. I'm betting it's something with the antenna grounding. Some antennas aren't supposed to be grounded. Maybe that's the case. I've also been told that just bolting an antenna through a bumper doesn't ground it. It actually needs a seperate wire. My Wilson antennas have a ground wire pigtail on them. Just some thoughts.

Yeah, mine works perfectly fine too, I have a grounded antenna mount, no ground on the cb box under the glove box and ours is fine? Where did you run the power to?

Pics would help... but a bad ground can do some good damage. Also post up some info on the type of antenna (model # would be great).

If you have everything grounded right, it might be the antenna. I bought one and went through the same thing and then found out it was bad. Try borrowing someone elses and see if that works.

Sounds like my exact install and experience as well. Except I did have to tune it to get the SWR to read correctly. Are you sure the SWR meter you have is functioning properly or that you are reading it correctly? The hardest part for me was figuring out what the readings were and how much adjustment mine needed. I ended up unscrewing the tip of my 4' firestik almost a full inch.

I ran my power to the cig lighter that gets power on start up. Used the cfe firestick/mount from quadratec. The mount bolts to the tailgate if you have a spare on there or not. Works well and didn't need to tune.

When I installed my CB, I got the same thing. I had a bad ground on the antenna and now it's perfect.

Not sure how much different the JK is from the TJ, but on mine there is a piece of steel on the top of the driver side fender well (interior, near the roll bar). There was already a piece of wire and connector from where the previous installed a security system. I used the same hole and viola! Previously I had it grounded on the bolts that held the mounting bracket to the tub and couldn't get it below 9.

I had a bad ground. The stud that connects to the bottom of the antenna mount DOES NOT NEED A WASHER. That one thing screwed me all up. THe FIRESTICK website and you guys helped out a lot. THe Firestick website helped me go through the whole system and helped me determine where I was going wrong. HIGHLY RECOMMEND BEFORE AN ISTALL!

THanks again

PA Out 0 Cobra 75

Anyone know if the Cobra 75 has a PA Out? I've seen (maybe) they have a Speaker Out, but don't want it on all the time, only on PA.. thanks

Here are a couple of the smaller units with PA:

Midland 1001Z
Cobra 19 DX

Then if you want to trade the PA for weather channels you can go with the Cobra 18 series which also features a front speaker, making in-dash installation possible.
