CB Antenna Questions (AEV rear bumper)
I have a question about CB antenna mounting and CB antenna systems. I have read tons of information about CB radio theory so I don't need links to standard definitions that I more then likely have already studied. What I'm really looking for is how you guys have specifically mounted and grounded your antennas.
For example, if you mounted your antenna on the mast of your after market bumper did you ground the mount to the body/frame? If so, how long did your ground wire/strap end up being? I've read that the shorter the wire the better the results but I just don't see how a short wire could be used to ground the mount when starting from the upper most part of the bumper mast. Is it sufficient to just ground to the tailgate and then ground the tailgate to the body/frame instead of running a wire from the top of the mast, through the tailgate to the body? Make sense?
Additionally, I was wondering about real world opinions on a no-ground plane (NGP) antenna system. I've read so many varying responses to this type of setup that it really makes it hard to make an informed decision. Some people say a NGP antenna works fine while others despise them. I understand that a NGP antenna system, by nature, is not as efficient as a standard ground plane (GP) antenna but is the decrease in performance that extreme. Are we talking about a 1.3 mile range instead of a 2 mile range or are we talking about a 50 yard range instead of a 2 mile range?
Thanks for your time and information.
