My Dual Battery Winch Thread

First off, I'd like give major thanks to 12VoltGuy for hooking me up with an awesome winch/dual battery control plate and every piece of wiring that I need to pull this off. As one of his beta testers and being an amateur electrician, I'll do my best to put this together . Everything came well wrapped and packaged ...and the control plate looks awesome!!

Today I mounted the control plate:

I moved my Lightforce rocker switch from the left side of the steering wheel to the right:

The dual battery tray from Benckmark should be here this week. Going to pick-up a couple Die Hard batteries ...hopefully next weekend cooperates and I can get the rest of this project underway. More to come soon ...

Cheers...

I think norm charges both and runs off one batt. Emergency starts off the 2nd battery

no, I will explain
norm both are connected with key on, IE: motor running
both are used & both are charging
center OFF
isolates batters, only using main. 2nd off not charging
EMER is an over ride
if you somehow drain main battery with motor off, say leave on stereo or lights, then flip switch to EMER & jump start yourself

Did Some More Work This Weekend

Again ...a big thanks to 12VoltGuy! Also, thanks to Benchmark Designs. Special thanks to Dr. Dirty and X-caiver for excellent dual battery write-ups that I used as references. JKO ROCKS!!

What I got from 12VoltGuy (minus the control plate pictured above):

In with the new:

12VoltGuy's dual battery control hook up was a snap ...really was plug and play. The whole package I got from him was very well thought out ...simple enough for a electrical novice like me. All I have left for this one is actually hooking up the winch to the control plate. More to come on that soon.

The dual battery tray was pretty straight forward. The work was time consuming, but a ton of fun. Like other folks, the Evap Purge relocation was interesting. I'll work on a bracket for it later.

Cheers ...

Anyone out there have experience hooking up a 12VoltGuy winch control to a winch with a sealed Solenoid? This is my first winch ...don't want to go cracking it open without consulting either the JKO experts or the magic 8 ball ....fucker keeps telling me to ask again later.

12VoltGuy's hook-up instructions are great!! I'm just looking for some assistance with this winch as the solenoid is sealed inside. Didn't want to open it up without getting some input from anyone who has dealt with something similar.

Any update? I was looking to do this same setup with the same winch. Just curious if you ever figured out the whole sealed solenoid thing?

Nope ...not sure I can do it without cracking open the sealed solenoid. Debating on whether that's a good idea or not.

12VoltGuy is the best resource for switches ...and a JKO vendor. Hid stuff is top notch and plug and play easy. My issue is with a sealed winch solenoid.

Sealed Solenoid

If you don't want to break the seal on the winch; then couldn't you use your winch control cable? Just order another cable; cut off the control handle end; plug the connector end into the socket on the winch; then run the cut end into your cab and strip the cable and hook the proper conductors to your in-cab control. DONE!!! You can leave it unplugged until you hit the trail; and, you just unplug it and plug the new control cable in if you decide to run the winch from outside the vehicle. Wouldn't that work?

Keep in mind I've never pulled apart a EPi. However, the integrated solenoid isn't a big deal. It's the solenoid itself that is sealed, not the winch. There should be some screws on either side that hold the cover on. On Warns, the cover is a pretty tight fit and sometimes the winch itself needs to be loosened from the bumper so you can wiggle the sides independently to get the cover off. Then the solenoid is easily accessed. From there, it's just a matter of hooking up the winch control wires to the solenoid using the studs that all the "standard" wires are hooked to.

Don't be scared of it. It's really pretty simple and you aren't breaking any seals. I'd bet there are even large enough holes in the case of the winch that you won't have to drill a hole.
