OEM 7 Pin Connector & Tekonsha fried wiring

While pulling my small RV to Moab for Labor Day Safari, everything appeared to be working fine until I applied the manual override on brake controller. At which time, I observed plumes of white smoke coming from behind steering column and the smell of burning wires. As a result of this melt-down, brake lights and traction control warning were permanently on when vehicle was running.

On my 2014 Wrangler JKU, I recently paid Jeep dealer to install an OEM 7 pin harness (822102014AB) and Tekonsha Prodigy 2; this harness was installed directly to 12V power without fuse/circuit breaker, and there was no diode on red wire to the brakes to prevent backfeed. It may also be worth noting that dealer did not properly position the controller.

When I returned to dealer, they faulted the Tekonsha, repaired Jeep wiring and rewired brake controller so no further damage would occur by disconnecting red wire. From what I've read, backfeed on the red wire is common which is why there is typically a diode installed. In this case, there was none.

What caused the melt-down? ... faulty brake controller or faulty installation. If the latter, which part of the install caused it (positioning, 12V with no circuit breaker, or red wire with no diode)?
