Starter wont catch--2007 Jeep Wrangler

I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler JK, 4 door. Stock jeep, no extra lights or anything added to the engine.

I have had the issues with it not starting until I put it into neutral, and that happens maybe once every other month.

Now, I am getting the situation where the car starts, but it doesn't catch. The jeep just cranks, cranks, cranks, until I turn off the key. It takes 2-4 times of this before it will finally start like normal.

I put a brand new battery in 2 months ago. I had the battery, starter and alternator checked, all are good.

I don't know what to do next, not sure if it is the fuel pump or what?

Automatic transmission? May be a park safety switch gone bad.

I have a 2007 with a auto tranny as well and this happens to me every couple of months. I have learned to turn the key to on put it in neutral and then back in park and try to start. Has worked every time with no problem. I always tell myself i need to get to the root cause but never seem to go down that road.

Any info people have on this would be great.

I will give that a try, so far today out of 11 starts, 9 have had the starter just crank and crank. Each time, it takes about 3-4 times before it starts normally. And twice now, when it finally did, I had the slippery road icon and the electrical icon on my dashboard and the car would not go above 10 miles an hour. I had to stop both times, turn off the engine and then it started up and drove like normal.

Manual trans here and I also had a recent starter issue preventing me from taking a car load of kids to school.

Had to pull the starter and take it apart. In my case the bendix (nylon junk) was stuck in the out position.

Here is a thread that I started and then answered my own questions and self insured by handling my own warranty claim right there in the driveway where it (fortunately) broke.

Some you tube video in that thread too.
