so i have my cb on the dash and i wanted to hide my wires. so i made a peice of sheet metal at work and ran it down the windshield so you couldn't see the wires. i held it in place by screwing it with the 4 metal screws in the side of the cb(the ones used to hold the cover on the cb). i went to the store about 5 mins after installing my new shield to hide my wires and i smell something like burning electronics. i feel my radio and its burning hot. so i shut if off and got right to work on taking this new shield off. and soon as i took it off and put everything back to normal the radio was fine. i guess i got to it just in time before the whole radio burned up. but i want to know what went wrong. was this piece of metal somehow grounding something or causing a connection somewhere it shouldn't have. am i at risk of having a damaged radio now? i dont think i broke anything because it seems to work fine still and its no longer getting hot now that i took the metal piece off. i also wanted to know if i can cut a hole in the top plate of the radio to add ventilation so something like this would not happen again. not that im going to be messing with the radio anymore i just dont want it to over heat for any reason.
heres what i have in mind for a vent. i have these grills left over form when i used to build computers. i belive its about 3 inches and i wanted to take the top plate off use a hole saw and cut a 3 inch hole in the top and put this grill over it.
think that would work or should i just leave it alone?
