Another CB question?

Hi guys!

Is it possiblw to use a hand held CB, but use an external antena?

I know handhelds don't have the range with their smaller antena, but could you mount a 4' antena to the tail gate and hook it up to a handheld with an adapter?

Just mulling around some options!

It'll work, just less than about the smallest permanent radio you can get. Handheld wont get out of come in very well at all. close trail use we've had a guy with that setup be able to not hear within 50' in a canyon. They "work", just very limited use for sure.

I know back in the late 80's early 90's when we ran on them in highschool for fun, I had a Realistic Handheld I picked up at Radio Shack and it always got the same range as regular units whenever I plugged it into a standard antenna.

But I haven't looked at handhelds since then so I couldn't even tell ya whats out on the market or how well they perform by today's standards.

Midland makes a handheld that also comes with a cable to hook it up to external, and a cig lighter plug to power it. My wife has this in her JK.

I have this setup now with a radio shack handheld CB and the cool tech ultramount antenna with 4' firestik firefly. I only tried it driving around town, but I picked up more chatter.

I will have to try it on the trails because at the last JKO run I was at with 25 Jeeps I couldn't hear the guys in the back with the 6" handheld antenna.

Would a Cobra 75WXST be considered a handheld?

kinda...but I think we all know the OP is referring to the "Walkie-Talkie" style....but yea sure I guess the 75 could be considered a hand-held....I wouldn't be offended by it, now some others might be.....

no, because it does not have its own power supply. A "handheld" operates on batteries. Or (like the Midland), you can use it with batteries, or it has a cigarette lighter adapter to power it.
