iPod integration

....So I was doing some searching online, and found that there is a cable you can buy, that integrates the iPod with the uconnect system, and allows the iPod to be charged, and controlled by the radio.

Only problem is, you have to purchase uconnect if you don't have it.

Dealer quoted me $295 for the uconnect system. The cable for the iPod integration is $35.

Do I really need the uconnect? Seems silly to me. In my PT Cruiser (2005 model) there is a small box that controls the iPod and/or satallite radio/CD changer. It cost about $125, and didn't require me to get a hands free device.

Is there a way around installing uconnect and still integrating the iPod?

I think you do need Uconnect. No other way to hook up the ipod cable.

Depends on if you have the MyGig or not. If you do not have the MyGig, then yes, you need the UConnect kit. The electronics for controlling the iPod are actually in the UConnect module itself, so having just the cable will do you no good.

If you have a MyGig, then since it's a 2010, you can add just an iPod interface cable (costs $87) and have full iPod integration. Of course if you had a MyGig, then you'd already have UConnect hand free, since it's standard on the 2010's that come with a MyGig.

Or, you can connect output cable from the ear phone jack to the Aux input for a few bucks and control the iPod from the iPod. Plenty of iPod chargers if you need that.

what makes the 2008 (rer) that I have differ from the 2010 (???). is the programming to control the ipod a software change that we can down load like the new 2.043(?) update? or are we just stuck out? im debating selling off my rer and goin aftermarket due to free and easy map upgrades as well as more functions and expansion without buying a lockpick to halfway hack it. when I bought the jeep I was under the impression that the mygig would "work" the ipod not "work with" the ipod.

There is a hardware difference on the inside starting in 09 which allows for iPod compatibility with the cable.

If you have a 2010 with MyGig Nav, then you only need the $87 cable. The part number is 82211853. It does allow full access and control of the iPod or iPhone, and charges it as well. I'm very happy with it on my JK.

I've heard that they seem to be in short supply righ now. I went through this when I got mine, took almost a month to get it. You might try LeeParts.com aor JustForJeeps.com to see if they have it in stock, might get it a bit quicker.
