Dual Battery/sPod Setup

My Dual Battery System and sPod install is now complete. Both kits are amazing and John and John where both great about answering all my questions.

I did all the work myself so any questions let me know.

Let me know your thoughts!

Engine Bay


sPod Housing and MUD UK Switches and Decals.

sPod-The Logos light up (Custom LED powered switches from MUD UK) with my dash lights and the also dim appropriately.


Red switch is for the Dual Battery Solenoid from Benchmark. The Orange indicator indicates of the batteries are tied together or not, ON-Tied OFF-Separated. This switch is a momentary switch for the boost function of the solenoid. If the batteries are separated pressing the switch ties the batteries together for 1 minute as a Boost function for heavy winch loads (9.5ti Coming Soon) or if the Jeep Engine battery is dead (self jump start). I had to severely modify this switch for it to work as I could not find a switch from Carling that did what I want (If requested I will explain how it was done)


Switches 2-6 orange indicators are lit when the switch is on.


Switches 2 and 3 will be used for ARB Air Lockers (Coming Soon) which will be powered by a Kilby OBA system (looking for comments on it, have heard mixed reviews).


Switches 4-6 power the IPF 968 Lights, Some either LongRange Beams or LEDs (Coming Soon) and an ARB Fridge/Freezer.


Benchmark Designs Dual Battery Box and Smart Solenoid.

This is great setup and will work well on my long trips to Oman with the ARB Fridge. Still need some ideas and what to do with that Emisions Box (The 2 black tubes)

Had these questions come through. Here are the answers for you enjoyment.

1) Can you send me more info on the switches. Id like to order some of those.

Switches are from MUD UK

MUD UK is a LandRover Defender Specialist and has the exact same carling switches from Carling just in different flavors. I went with these due to the colors line up closely with the jeep dash lights (Green and Orange). They are also powered by LEDs which A: Will Last Longer and B: Are much easier on the eyes at night (the incandesant bulbs that are provided with the sPod are VERY bright and would require a dimmer available from OTRATTW.


2) How did you wire them so they are on when your lights are on? Or do they automatically light up since the system is powered. I like the idea of having them lit and the ability to dim them.

The switches from MUD UK have an extra circuit built in for you to provide a 12 volt source for the logo illumination. John from sPod sold me an additional harness and I solider tapped lead from the HVAC panel for illumination. Has not been an issue so far (as for overloading that particular circuit) will update if an issue arises. I will take some additional pictures of fully dimmed to fully illuminated soon. The Orange indicator is powered internally when the switch is put in the ON position.

3) Do they come with the switch labels or did you make those?

MUK UK sells the labels that are printed on Vinyl and then Laminated. They are 13 Dollars for a pack and are well worth it, the quality is top notch. They come is Black on Clear, White on Clear, and Clear on Black (not recommended due to the labels not being an exact fit every time when appyling. You will have a boarder on the edges) I am working with them now to see if I can get some custom printer ones for future devices.

The LEDs in these switches can be swapped out for different colors if so desired due to the switches having white lenses. You can buy the LEDs from any local Radio Shack.

The Battery switch was a ROYAL PITA. I had to add 3 circuits to the switch in order to have a indicator light work with the signal circuit on the Cole Hersey Solenoid and the momentary switch work properly also. I will have to look at my notes on how I did it exactly. There was one whole night dedicated to the stupid switch but I am happy with the results. I don't know how long it will last (due to the internal wiring changes and the additional circuits added) but when it dies I will figure out something new.

I am an Audio/Video/Lighting Engineer and Project Manager by trade and am extremely anal about anesthetics. I like to do it ONCE and RIGHT.
