Teenage Drivers

Alright, so, I know that this sounds odd or hypocritical coming from a teenage driver, but.... FUCK TEENAGE DRIVERS.

On Thursday, I was on my way to pick up my little brother and step-sister from school, and witnessed for myself exactly why everyone hates us. I was in our truck, rig is down right now, and going down a dirt road at a reasonable speed for the conditions, eg at or below the speed limit. This road leads straight to the back of the High School, so a lot of the students take it to and from school every day. It's really windy, with steep hills and blind corners, with about an 11 inch drop of for the shoulder. On one of the final corners before reaching the campus, one of the students comes flying around the corner at ludicrous speed in her Chevy HHR, slides over to my side of the road almost taking me out and putting me into the ditch. I'd say I'm a reasonably good driver, (I know, all teenagers say that ) and I was able to recover my own now-out-of-control truck. As this unfolds, through me rear-view mirror, I watch her swerve and over correct her steering multiple times, and run off the road, through a barbed wire fence, and slamming into the ditch less than half a foot from a telephone pole. I immediately turn my truck around to go make sure the driver was alright, and as I get there, some complete imbecilic sophomore steps out of the car. I ask her if she's alright, and she tries to play everything off like nothing happened. No concern for her now trashed HHR, no concern for the fact that she could have rolled, smashed into the telephone poll, or rolled /INTO/ the telephone poll. Then she proceeds to get back into her car, back it back onto the road, and drive off, again, as if nothing happened.

Seriously? I'd be freaking out if that happened to me. My mother would skin my ass! Wreckless driving and several hundred dollars worth of damages? I'd be lucky if I had a bicycle to get around on after that!
Now I understand why everyone hates teenage drivers.
PEOPLE LIKE THAT GIVE US ALL BAD NAMES.

I know I'm only 17 myself, but come on, people. I just don't understand the mental complex that belongs to the majority of my generation.

I'd like to conclude my rant for apologizing to the rest of the world for those of my generation who shouldn't even be allowed behind the wheel of a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe.

If that were me when I was 17 I probably would have jumped out of my truck because I would never drive and HHR and say something along the lines of "Dude did you see that shit? I almost hit that pole." I would have laughed and drove off. Yes I was an asshole on dirt roads in high school, ended up in the ditch more times than I can count but also never came close to hitting anyone(well not too close)

Now that I'm older though all teenage drivers are idiots, well most anyway. Had one the other day almost rear end me on the interstate when traffic decided to stop all of a sudden luckily this kid in his moms brand new Durango had some good reaction time and swerved the right way. I could see the look of fright on his face in my rearview but he did good, other than following to close of course but who doesn't on the freeway.

Well it looks as if you are the exception and not the norm.

Odd? Yes a bit. Hypocritical? No.

Hypocritical would be someone who drove like that, saying it in 10 years time!

I did my share of sliding on dirt roads when I was younger, but not on ones where there would be many other people, and not on the wrong side of the road. And the only time I slid off the dirt was when I was doing about 10mph! No damage, though and there was no one else around to hit. I always stuck to my side of the road. I considered it a failure on my part otherwise.

I thought I was better than average, (don't we all? ), and would have to say that the fact that I survived my youth without injury from a crash is at least part testament to that. (Also surviving city/motorway commuting every work day on a motorbike for the last 18 years...)

Excellent work dodging and recovering! Keep cool in spite of the idiots and keep it rubber side down!

Teenagers hell, try driving around old folks every day. They don't drive, they aim.

My Daughter is old enough to know better but still tailgates, like 2 feet off the bumper of the person in front of her

Sure, I like to slide sideways sometimes, like leaving my own drive way, but like you said, time and place. I may be stupid sometimes, but I'm responsible about it!

Having a 90 year old great grandmother, I can confirm this statement.

Responsibly Stupid. I like that. Well, stay focused out there. Anticipate bad things and drive defensively. It will serve you well. Stay safe. I need you to pay for my Obamacare.

Well, it is certainly possible to do your stupid stuff responsibly. You just make sure that the area you are in is clear first.

And stupid is different for everyone. Many people would consider me to be doing a stupid thing every day but commuting to work by motorbike in traffic, yet I consider the associated risks to be acceptable. Other people like skydiving...

I would tend to agree with you, MOST teenage drivers are fucking idiots behind the wheel; text messages, gabbing on the phone, paying more attention to their friends, eating, drinking, etc., etc. In fact, I think most teenagers are idiots in general, so thanks for going against the grain on this one.

Even when I was a teenager, I knew I was one of the "smarter" ones. I didn't do dumb shit like the shit you see today; YouTube videos of idiots sticking firecrackers in their asses, doing backflips off buildings, riding in shopping carts down flights of stairs, etc.

I'm totally dumbfounded by the teenage "behavior" going on today, it must be that whole not getting your ass beat, but getting a "time out" thing. My parents would kick the fucking hell out of me for doing the shit that goes on today. It's seriously a good thing I don't have kids, because I'd be in jail for child abuse.

Keep doing the right thing. Acting stupid isn't cute, nor is it funny.

It's not just teenagers..
Stupid is Stupid... Can't fix that!!
I see it all day every day, doing road construction, I see far too many people who were too closely sheltered by there parents when they were a child, now they have no common sense.. It's not there fault though.
Sad thing is there's more kids today who will be the dumb asses of tomorrow than there is today.
To the OP.. Good Luck, and when you have children.. Remember, they are the child, you are the adult.. Make em mind and be respectful.

So my summer job is a crew supervisor/mechanic for the Park District in my hometown...most of the employees are teens like me... we were trenching electrical line out at our lake campground and one of the dumbasses was caught riding on the hood of one of the trucks we brought out. Another took the little 2WD S10 we have and decided to drift around the gravel corners when he had to go get some conduit.

Most just don't give a shit. I've had to replace numerous parts on trucks, trimmers, and mowers because they simply do not care about anything. I'm the only one that the superintendent trusts to tow a trailer, or to get parts out of town because he just can't trust the others with the nicer trucks we have.
