Jeep on History Channel Modern Marvels - Full Episode

I had seen a brief clip of this on the forum before, but I found a full version here. It's 45 minutes long, but worth it.

Go to 19:34 FTW. I'd love to see this done to a JK.

My grandfather (on my dad's side) fought with the Allies in WW2 in Egypt and would tell me that the name "Jeep" first started because they were called "General Purpose" vehicles, and had a "GP-1" stamped on the crates when they would ship. Folks called the vehicle "GP" and pronounce it "Gee-Pee". Eventually, it became Jeep for short. He said the Popeye character came around a few years later and some even put a sticker of the Jeep character on the sides of the GPs.

I guess the origins of the name will remain unknown. I like my grandfather's story though.
