Old Sparky

We took a little day trip to Huntsville today. We visited the H.E.A.R.T.S. Veteranís Museum and the Texas Prison Museum. Both were nicely done, fairly small and inexpensive but had several interesting displays. Old Sparky caught my attention. Very simple, straight forward, and effective. Itís easy to visualize how the electrode to the head and the one to the ankle would get the job done.

Texas State Penitentiary at Huntsville, also known as the Walls unit of the state prison system, was the state's first enclosed penitentiary for convicted felons. On March 13, 1848, the Texas legislature passed the bill to establish a state prison. The Huntsville Penitentiary was the only prison in the eleven Confederate states still standing at the end of the Civil War.

The electric chair was used from 1924 until 1964. It was used to execute 361 men when it was hooked up at the Walls Unit. According to the director of the Texas Prison Museum where it is displayed, "We have all the equipment that goes with it. If it were hooked up, it should work just like it used to."

The Walls Unit is still in operation today and is the most active execution chamber in the United States.

Something about a chair just sitting in the middle of an empty room with all that stuff on it. It scares the shit out of me.

Yeah, that's the feeling I got out of it too. I was told the room was an exact recreation of the original.

I remember back in the 80s when a killer at Huntsville was scheduled to die. He had killed a clerk in cold blood at a 7-11 type place. The students from Sam Houston were out there holding signs along the lines of "We pay for our beer, it's time Smith (or whatever the hell his name was) he does too"

@RUCKDOG - somehow I don't think local college student would hold those signs today.

LOL at the directors comment. I mean there is not much to go wrong on that contraption, even after 60 years. Now if it had to run through the Jeeps CanBUS, that would be a different story.

I think it's time to dust it off.

I would hope there are a few that would still hold the signs.....I thought it was pretty damned funny at the time. I guess that's why i can remember it after 30 years. But you're probably right, if a student held a sign like that he would be summoned to tribunal for a hearing and promptly be drummed out of school.

We have become a nation of pussies. I don't think America today could do half the things we accomplished in the past. Pretty damned cynical at the moment.

i had scrolled down after staring at that( & before even reading the OP or any of these posts) the picture for alomst 10 minutes, to reply how if I were walked from a cell , down a hall and into that room with that contraption being front/center like that , I would literally piss myself before they even moved me a foot past the threshold. That just emotes death + human-bacon

I think they should update that thing, put it on a truck and start executing the death penaltys in public at where the crime occurred. Not to many years ago a state rep from a high crime district in New Orleans proposed just that.

And people say the death penalty doesn't prevent murders. HA..show this picture around and not some dumbass laying on a gurney waiting to be put to "sleep" and see what kind reaction you get.

I wonder if we had them hold a cast iron pan if we could cook bacon in it or would it short out?

What's the difference between public hanging which we were doing before hitler and frying an individual. I think it would be a great "teaching" tool. Imagine little wanna be a badass bobby in the gathering crowd.

sorta like when we were in elementary school and they'd bring those drunk-driver totaled autos to the parking lot to teach kids how " O.K. kids; drinkin/drivin' is bad, mmm-Kay?"; i see how that could be a useful deterrent ,now...
