DRL Question

Hey guys,

I am thinking of activating the day-time running lights (DRL).

Which ones serve as DRLs on the JK? The headlights or the turn signals?

How are you enabling yours?

I have a 2010 and the AEV ProCal gave me these options:
low beams
fog lamps
turn signals

I went with low beams. The two things I didn't expect where that they will only light when the vehicle is in gear (so you can't enable them, then run around in front of your JK to see if they work, if your JK is in park), and when using a turn signal, the corresponding headlight will turn off while the signal is on. That's a DOT requirement. Well, I should say there is a DOT requirement that if a DRL is within so many millimeters of a turn signal, the DRL has to turn off while the signal is on. I've never measured the MM between the JKs headlight and turn signal, but I assume that's why they do that.

If you're going to use a ProCal to enable yours, and you have a 2011+, you might want to check their website because I think the options for what you can enable may have changed.

IDK yet. I just had the DRLs activated on my 2012 Challenger. The dealer had to do it, but it was as simple a task as plugging the vehicle to the computer and going into an "Options" menu and selecting "Canada".

On the Challenger, it is the turn signals that serve as DRLs.

I am hoping it is just as easy on the JK. But I want to know first which lights I should expect to see on before I ask my dealer :-)

Ah, cool. Yeah, I'm not sure which ones come on when the dealer enables that feature.

Well, yes and no...

Daytime running lights are your "highbeam" headlights.

DRL's are highbeams at 25 to 30% power.

Which means, DRL's point straight forward, and remember, even if you have DRL's, you still need to turn on headlights at night.

Now considering getting a procal to move drl function to fogs. It would simplify some ideas I got from Daniel Stern.

I am a troll. Do not take my advice. It isn't going to help.

Hello, I am new to this site and I am thankful to have a place to come and talk about and ask questions about the Jeep Wrangler. I have a 2013 Sahara Unlimited that I believe was in Canada at one point and the DRL are on. How can I turn those off? Do I need to go to the dealer to have this completed or can I do this myself. I see where some people have switched theirs to the fog lights using the procal. I do not know what that is. Any guidance is appreciated.

IIRC, you might be able to have the dealer turn them off. The tool they use (StarScan) is sometimes limited in what it can do, so def call ahead. Or you can buy a tool (like the ProCal from AEV) and turn the DRLs off/on yourself. I have a US Jeep and turned them on. I'm assuming it'd work to to turn them off on a Canadian Jeep.

If you think you'll be changing tire sizes later, it might be less expensive in the end to buy the AEV ProCal, as you can use it to reprogram your JK for the new tire sizes, as well as turn on/off the DRL.

I used my ProCal to turn on all the lights as DRLs. When in gear and the hand brake off, all the lights are on as if I turned them on with the regular switch.

I've been debating doing that! Right now, the jeep I just bought has been programmed to use the fog lamps as the DRL. I've got JW Speaker LEDS, and they're crazy bright, but I just don't know hahaha! My minivan is the epitome of lazy. The lights do what they have to when they have to, so when I got the Wranglers, I had to physically turn the lights on. I've only caught myself once, not turning on the lights, so if ithe happens a couple more times, I will change it hahaha!

I opted to move DRL to marker lights after a night run. Spotters can't see shit if your headlights are on.
You can pull the emergency brake up a notch to disable, but the chime drove me crazy. And I stayed that way.
