ENGO WINCH WARNING!

Never liked the gear box noise my new 10,000 lb winch makes, checked the bolts on the box today and they were loose, same with the shifter bolt. Pulled the planetary cover and I got water pouring out. Don't know if it was the loose bolts or the two paper thin dry gaskets. Easy fix, pulled the gear set out, the outer ring, cleaned and greased it all and sealed it with RTV gasket maker and Bobs your uncle. Sounds a lot better. Any one running these winches this is your heads up, check it out, the planetary gear set comes out as a unit. Just pay attention taking it apart, not too hard, you don't want the ears to rust. Going to pull it apart in a month and see if the fix works. I'll get back to you.

i have that exact winch. thanks for the heads up.

i have never dug into one to do any sort of maintainence as this is my first winch. do you have any diagrams or pics? i hate to get into the thing then get it all fuxxed up and cant get it back together.

Checked their website, clicked on "About Us" page. No history other than the owner is the son of the creator of Mile Marker.

Lifetime mechanical warranty, 1-year electrical

Never used their products, nor will. Shows they were rated best value, appears not to be the case.

There is no mention of dust or water protection/sealing.

Who knows maby I got one with loose bolts. We run a lot of water but never spent any time sitting submerged. In the paperwork they have an exploded diagram of the winch. Other than the water issue it's a bad ass winch for the money. 10,000 lb, syn rope, aluminum fairlead, wireless and corded remotes for right around $500. Going to open it back up in a month and see what's up. Will get back to you on that.

Loose bolts seems odd, Loc-Tite not used? Wonder if just daily driving would have caused it to happen eventually? You'll find out I guess.

Around here I'm literally one mile west of the Cape Fear River (brackish @ that point) and about 3 miles to the ocean. For me sealed, dust proof, stainless and/or rust proof are best. Don't know your relative location to salt, etc.

Check the Allen head bolts on the gear case and shifter and get back to us.

It's not like they were falling out, I was able to get a little more than a quarter turn out of them. I'm just wondering if that's how the water got in. I think the sound comes from the cut of the planetary gears. Don't know.

unsub.... You were Right!

Every bolt I got a 1/3 of a turn or better. The shifter bolt was over 3/4 turn.

This winch is brand new... so I suggest you check them.

Just checked the gear cover. Got less than a quarter turn out of each of them. It is noisy but I figured that was that price to pay for a low buck, 10k with synthetic. Not to worried about water in AZ. Winch has only gotten wet twice, both times from the car wash.

I actually have a E9000 on the jeep buggy, got it from Dave at poly. I have to rotate my gear housing so that the lever is in the right place when its mounted. I can tell you that they use a flimsy little paper gasket to seal the gear case to the winch. I found my first one had the gasket pushed in on one side and small tears at some of screw holes. No biggie though, a little silicone fixes it. My guess is that its that paper gasket that causes the screws to go loose over time.

It did break on its first outing though. Apparently they had an issue with the brake inside the drum. They weren't getting assembled correctly. I talked with poly and the next day had a call from Engo, a few days later a new winch showed up and this ones been fine.

Its a $300 winch so thats pretty much what I was expecting.

Mine has quit working

I was able to trace that the solenoid's seem to be bad. I did like the instructions said and knocked on it to see if the contacts were stuck. I have power to them, just not on the way out. Of course I didn't find this out til I had about 10 ft of line pulled out. Had to use jumper cables to get the cable wound back up. Will be calling Engo tomorrow.

I was contemplating an Engo 10K w/ synthetic cause of the price. I might just hold off at this point. I don't need it to fail out in the boonies (Everglades) in my neck of the woods.
