Differential Fluid Change Front and Rear

Here is a quick write up to change your differential fluid. If you can change your oil then this will be a breeze.

What You Will Need
• 3/8" Drive Ratchet
• Torque Wrench
• 3" Ratchet Extension
• Oil Catch Pan
• Paper Towels
• 4 Quarts 75W90 Synthetic Gear Oil

Front Differential Capacity:
2.7 pints (1.35 quarts)

Rear Differential Capacity:
4.75 pints (2.375 quarts)


1. Use the square head of a 3/8" Drive ratchet, remove the top bolt on the differential cover

2. Place an oil catch pan underneath your differential. Then, using a 3/8" drive ratchet with a 3" extension attached to it, remove the drain bolt from the bottom of the differential. Allow your Jeep differential to drain completely.

3. Your differential drain bolt is magnetic and the inside end of it should have fine metal shavings. Clean with a paper towel and some brake cleaner to wipe the bolt clean.

4. Using a 3/8" drive ratchet with a 3" extension attached to it, reinstall your drain bolt back on to the base of your differential. Tighten this bolt to 25 ft. lbs. of torque.

5. Fill up your differential with your gear oil. The front differential only needs 2.7 pints (1.35 quarts) and the rear only needs 4.75 pints (2.375 quarts). If you have factory covers, all you need to do is fill up your differentials until gear oil oozes out of the fill hole. If you have an after market differential cover that has a higher fill hole, DO NOT fill up your differential with any more gear oil than it needs as it will just end up getting pumped out of the breather tube and make a mess.

6. Using the square head of a 3/8" Drive ratchet, re-install the fill bolt on to the differential cover. Tighten this bolt to 25 ft. lbs. of torque.


Side Note:

I prefer to remove the covers, drain, then clean (with brakleen) and inspect.
Replace the covers and refill (with Royal Purple). To each his own..

Me too, but there was a post on another thread on how to change the diff fluid so I did a quick write up for them. Dealer wanted to charge him/her $260... so I just wanted to save him/her some cash and time.

So i have started my rear fluid change (dealer wanted $140 per axle). So I have one work of warning do not tighten the diff cover bolts to 30 ft/lbs. You will snap the head of the bolt off (ask how I know).

I am now working on extracting the bolt but needed to stop before I damaged myself or the Jeep. It is pretty straight forward and I appreciate the write-up.

just did mine after some wheeling caused a small leak in the front dana 30 - took about an hour. the rancho glide plate made it a pain in the ass. without that thing it would have been 30min.

the specs at autozone said the front diff required 2.1qt of oil. im thinking now that may have been for the 44. in any event - i put 2qt in and pulled the funnel out and about 1/2 a qt poured out of the fill hole (on level ground).

Doing this one over the weekend along with manual transmission and transfer case changes. The factory spec from my Android app says API Service Grade GL-5 80W-90 gear oil or 75-W140 for towing...

My service manual says that you need to add an additive if you have the trac lock. Anyone know why and what it is?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you don't like it, go break it!

Don't need additive with most name brand oils.

I highly suggest adding a friction modifier when doing this. helps keep the gears slippery! $7 for a bottle at napa
