engine noise...

sounds like somethings grinding.. i got a shorter belt to bypass the A/C compressor cuz thats what everyone seemed to think it was.... still sounds exactly the same tho. any ideas? sounds like a pully to me but i have no way of knowing what one it is

Get a real long screw driver start the motor touch the bolt on the pulley with the screw driver put your ear on the handle. Try the alternator too. Be careful around the belt don't kill yourself. Easy way to listen to motor noises. And stab yourself with a screw driver.

I'd go with the idler pulley or tensioner pulley

I've replaced my idler pulley 7 times and tensioner 3 or 4....they dont like the sand and water.

does it sound like this one?

You could always take the belt off and run the engine to make sure its one of the pullys and not in the engine somewhere. Spin all pullys while the belt is off too.

Tim, you would probably know this. Is it true that the same pulley is used for the idler and on the belt tensioner? I see p/n 04891720AA for the idler pulley, but the tensioner is only available as a complete assembly. Seems like you could pull the tensioner, replace the pulley then reinstall.

no mines not that loud. lol and its a lil bit of a different sound

Yep same wheel same bearing, Dustin changed Snipers the other week on the side of Atsion Rd.

Yeah what he said ^^^

Napa and Autozone both carry them now. I know the Napa pulleys are about an 1/8th or 1/16th more narrow then the stock but they work, thats what I've used over and over

TIP: DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE BOLT FOR THE IDLER PULLEY......it is a special shoulder bolt that Jeep didnt even put on the parts list. I broke one and I got extremely lucky the a mechanic at the dealer had one in his toolbox. Chris had to jump through hoops to find out the part number and I believe he finally found a guy in SC that knew the number. Its in my pulley thread somewhere on here.

I was going to get a couple pulleys as spares, then I saw the entire tensioner assembly is only $2 or $3 more than the pulley alone. Makes no sense. Will try NAPA or AZ this weekend. Thanks.

im almost possitive its my alt.. took the belt off n checked, my ac compressor pully is pretty much ceased. and my alt pully makes a grinding sound. which is what im hearing

Take that sucker to the car wash and spray it down then use an electric motor lube on it. Might help worse you can do is kill it.

I would get a pulley puller and remove it and try to lube it up or if you can find a rebuild shop, prob get it rebuilt for $45-60. I have a few friends down here with TJ's and XJ's and they kill theirs all the time. Autozone has a lifetime warranty on their alternators and they've returned them full of mud with no problems
