Fordyce 9/24 Update

Well it was an adventure and a test of character.

Chromedome did fine. He had his father-in-law, Eroll and his dog, Bella, with him and he was driving back to SoCal, so he chose to take the less difficult lines which still proved to be plenty challanging. He made it through with a few bruises.

Me on the other hand, got my ass handed to me. I flopped the JK again, driver side, on one of the toughest spots , for my rig, on winch hill 1. Dented and scratched the passenger rear door when I used it as a rock slider. Busted a ujoint and couldn't slide the replacement axle shaft into the carrier because the splines on the shaft were bad, which put me in 3wheel drive. I had to hammer through and winch the rest of the way through committee crossing and out. I lost my phone, fought death wobble and grenaded my rear driveshaft on the drive home. Luckily, brought my spare drive shafts because I was going to Fordyce. We ran half the trail. It took 10 hours from start to finish. It should take 5 hours.

I left my house at 6:00am friday and got home at 3:30 am saturday.

Much thanks to Chromedome for working his ass off, helping me get the JK back on the rubber and removing the broken axle shaft. We were exhausted.

My wife wakes me up this morning and asks if I'm ok. She tells me a guy named Kenny found my phone as he ran over it with his trailer, at the trailhead. It didn't break. He's sending it Fedex. Thanks Kenny. ( Edit: Never got my phone back)

I have some vid and a couple pics. I'll post later.

Rob

Rob that really sucks I'm sorry we weren't there to help you with the driveshaft! Was is closer to sacto or livermore?
When we got home we decided we had a really great time! it just didn't seem that great some moments on the trail . Fordyce doesn't let you rest, although it's not always technical it does require your complete attention all the time, very taxing mentally & physically. I had no camera and therfore no pics. sorry its up to you to post what you want folks to see . Thanks again for hosting this epic adventure! looking forward to the next one Barrett lake maybe.
BTW my front diff is leaking like a sieve!

I was 15min from home when the drive shaft exploded. 11:45pm. I finished at 2:45 pm. Your assessment of Fordyce is spot on. Makes the Con' seem like a sunday drive with the family. Next time we can finish the other three winch hills.

I have kitty litter under my rear diff. I just sealed it the night before our trip.

Going to the A's game today, I'll post what's worth watching when I get back.

I have a similar Fordyce adventure that ultimately lead to the demise of my XJ. Glad you made it out alright.

Turned out to be a football score. We left to tailgate when the score was 9-1 Rangers. It ended up 16-7 or something like that. It was hot wasn't it.

Chromedome and Rubirobv on Fordyce, Vids and Pics

My attempt at Winch Hill 1.
Leave it to a professional camera man, to frame the shot in the tree, at the beginning. Nice touch Chromedome. For some reason, Chromedome said " shit" alot, on this trip. Not sure why

Chromedome on Driveline Hill. The first obstacle, when you come in at the Eagle Lakes trailhead.

Some vids of the first water crossing. I think the creek is flowing at around 40cfs. Imagine 250 to 300cfs. I think it gets as fast as 500 cfs.

I was going to put this in the drunk thread. I still might do it. I'm holding the camera in my right hand and driving with my left hand. Not easy.

A couple pics

I didn't take many pics. After my flop and removing tha axle shaft, I quit taking vids and pics. The trail didn't get any easier after that.

I guess that's about it.

Thanks

Here's another vid of Chromedome going through a fun off camber section. Nothing hardcore.

Seriously sorry to hear about all the damage - it doesn't look that bad given that it was a pretty hard flop. Thanks for the videos
