Let me get an opinion here... X Unlimited, 5" BDS Coil Lift, 35" Pro-Comps, XRC-10 winch, no gear changes, no locker changes.

Smart to go without lockers and gears???

A lot of chit coming...

ARGGH - I'd love to go, but this is a bad weekend for me. I was just thinking it's about time for a snow run - last year was great. I'd be down for April Eugene or any other upcoming weekend but can't do the 6th.

Thanks for calling Rob, glad you can make it! You beat me to Dave. I just got a call back from him and he said he was on the phone with you when I called him. I'll add the time and meeting place to the original post.

cruzcode, I wouldn't let lockers/gears keep you away. Lockers do make a difference, but I've been snow wheeling quite a bit w/o them. Just make sure you air down low enough to get good flotation on your 35's. With a winch and at least two other rigs you'll be fine. Lockers or not everyone usually ends up taking a strap when you're out playing in the fresh stuff. Come up Saturday if you can.

DiscoBay, hope you can make it. It should be a great run with all the new snow we are getting!

Eugene, Cab, CashMoney - sorry you guys can't come. April sounds good, let's put something together. Cash, congrats on the build for 40's! Can't wait to see some pics.

Cab (and anyone else close by), I'm doing a night run Friday night after work (6p-11p or so) if anyone wants to come. Probably take firewood up and do smores and hot chocolate. I already had this planned with someone, so I figured ... just make it a pre run for Saturday. Can't ever get too much snow!

'bout time, huh?!

Finally some pics! Rubirobv and I went up Gaston Grade out of Washington on Hwy 20 Saturday. We had a great time in some beautiful country until ... well, pics of that a little later. The snow conditions were a little mushy, but we had a fun time!

Here are a couple pics of the night run the night before.
The snow on this turn was about 5-6 feet deep and sloped towards the dropoff on the downhill side of this turn. The inside of the turn had a hole over a covert covered in a foot or two of snow. Blazing trail, I tried to ride the ridge between the hole and the slope. Everything went well until I lost forward momentum and had to back up. Backing up, gravity took over and everytime I tried to back up and try to get back up on top, and I would slide further down the slope. Darn slipery snow! Well, in the dark with that drop off not too far away, it was time for the winch. After using three different trees as anchor points to get around the corner, I had to turn around and go back when none of the others in the group could get through that corner. We had a great time though. Night wheeling in the snow is a whole different perspective and sure is a LOT of fun!!

And then to complete the experience, guess who had to pull out the winch rope on that same corner the next morning.

Carnage!

Well, here's something you don't expect on a snow run.

After giving me a strap, rubirobv got stuck himself. Trying to get out, his front right tire dug down to the dirt. Then a little throttle ... wheel spin ... and when the driver tire hooked up, the the passenger side axel SNAPPED! The good news ... chromoly's covered under warranty. The bad news ... we were done for the day, had to pull an axel in the snow, and Rob got to drive out in 2WD.

While we were 'playing' with the axel, the Kelsie and Ryan went to work building snow forts for a snowball fight and explored an open mine shaft. Well, they found the mine, but decided against exploring it ... thinking about hibernating bears I guess.

Ryan and Kelsie doing some sledding on the way out.

All in all, it was an awesome day. Rob & Ryan, thanks for coming up, it was great wheelin' with you again!

Nate, Thanks for meeting us, especially after wheeling the night before. Ryan and I had a fun time despite the axle break. It was great to get out in the snow. Ryan had a blast sledding behind your JK.
I was dug in the snow pretty deep and as I tried to shovel the snow from around the tires with my little camp shovel, I thought the snow was more like wet cement than snow. It was very wet and stuck to everything. Later that night I was talking to my Dad, who's a 30 year resident of Grass Valley, about my axle break. Before I mentioned anything about the snow, he told me that the locals call it " Sierra Cement". I thought it was funny. Anyway, it was a good lesson in snow wheeling.

Nate did an outstanding job of getting me out of there. He made a base for my hi-lift jack out of his tow strap. It worked perfectly. To get me turned around he graded a parking lot by driving forward and back , packing down the snow. I was impressed to say the least. I'm ready to go back up for some revenge.

Here's a few pics before my camera quit.

Broken Axle

I think I did a fine job on that axle.
