HAM anybody?

Hello, is anybody home?
Anyway, the club I belong to is looking into getting Amatuer Radio (HAM) licenses. I am currently licensed KF6UIO and would like others to be also. So is there anybody in the phone booth interested? I believe I can get discounts with greater number of purchases (books and such) so the more the merrier. Also I believe that with enough people signed up, those that administer the test will come to us. Time and place to be determined later.
So if anybody is interested let me know and we'll see where this will go.

P.S. Hey Jeepthing, any snow yet?

Brian

I had about 7" at my house on Monday. With the rain now though, it's almost gone. This storm's a little warmer, so the snow level is higher up the mountain. Chain control is about 15 minutes up the hill, so it's coming down. Gotta love all this snow!

K6JOE here. I know that the Modesto Club offers free testing once a month or so. I'd expect you could find a similar arrangement in the Bay.

Thanks for the info. We are still in the early stages of the process, but I am going to talk to a few of my friends that belong to some local HAM clubs here in the Bay Area to see if they offer the testing also. Years ago when I got my license I know that the Mt Diablo A.R.C. offered free testing. So we'll see.

Oh,

And the best way to pass is just to spend a few hours reading the question pool right before the test.

Once you have your license you can learn how the radios really work.

I've been reading the books myself, but I have not yet taken the test.

The Sunnyvale VEC offers testing in Sunnyvale and Redwood city on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month, alternating between Sunnyvale and Redwood City. The ARRL offers testing on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month at the Saratoga fire house.

They're all walk-in only and they're both $15 per exam session.

I'm thinking of showing up for the Jan 8th one in Sunnyvale when I'm back in town.

KE6GFB here. Good idea on going ham. Once you use 2M on the trail you will want to throw the c.b. in the trash!

Looks like we'll need to set up a little net one night and talk. Should be able to find a repeater or two to make it happen.

KJ6HEJ here.

MBATF, I would love to see where/how you have your radio mounted. Same with antennas.

I am running a K540 with a NR770 on a Wild Boar rack. I had to beat the mount into submission to get it to fit on the rack since i wanted it on the stationary side so i could still use the awning. I have that hooked up to an Icom IC-T7H that I mount with an ipod holder and an external mic. It works ok, but I'm only pushing 1.5w. I'm thinking of putting a Yaesu 8800 or 8900 in, but don't really know how I want to do it.
