rim size

can any one tell me if its better to get 16" or 17 "rims on 2008 rubican 4 dr i have 17" stock rims but theres more tire sizes on 16". its wifes every day driver 70% of time. trails 30% of time i have a 2.5 teraflex would like 285/75 but what rim is better

Look a little harder. You will find their is more tires available ifor the 17" rim.

any body have performance opinion? the tire size i want i only see in 16" rims. if i go to 33/12.5/17 i think ill loose to mutch power.

Depends on what type of tire you are looking at getting and how much you want to spend. If you are looking for a good off-road tire but on a budget a 15 or 16 would be better alot more options for a 15 and atleast a $100-$150 per tire cheaper that adds up to alot when you need 5. If you are looking for an all-season than I would stick with the 17" but my suggestion would be go with atleast a good all terrain if you plan on going off road at all and all season will not cut it. Personally I would not go off-road with anything but a good mud tire because you never know what lies ahead.

16" tires are generally cheaper than 17's. Only problem I've seen with a 16" tire though is that most of them seem to be a D or E load range, which is great for durability and handling, but it makes your ride much harsher. I'd say go 15" or 17". 15's will fit if you get the right backspacing and the right wheel. There was a thread on here somewhere listing confirmed wheel fittments.

I've read that some 15" rims get too close or rub on the brake calipers. So check fitment of the rims you want before you put any money down. 16" rims you do save a few bucks per tire and with 17"+ you do get better on road manners because you have less rubber to move when cornering. But you probably didn't buy a JK for its cornering abilities.

My choice would be 16" minimum rim size that'll clear the calipers and more rubber so you can run a lower tire pressure, which helps off-road.

There is some good advice in that post. When we ordered ours, I specifically mad sure we got the 16" wheels because of the $50-100 difference in 17" tire prices.

........My other hobbies include: Older cars and trucks; Spending money on unfinished projects, and continuing to not finish them...

I bought the 15" crager soft 8's with D30 front axle. I like alot of others had to grind off the excess metal from casting off of the caliper bracket to clear.(very minimal) I also installed some 1/8 wheel spacers to give just a little extra breathing room, but weren't probably accually needed. Im not sure but I think guys with the D44 on the rubi's had to grind more but I could be wrong but I ordered mine from Summit Racing and as long as you dont mount the tires and you can fit them on both sides first and if more trouble than you think they are worth then you can return them.

I have 18s on mine (I wish I could get rid of them, but the GF loves the big blingies) and I tell you everything costs more. If I had a time machine I would go back and get 15s or 16s and save money on wheels and tires.

Just curious

I have 17" wheels ( black procomp 7028s) on 37s and the wheels are chewed up. They're so bad that if I choose to keep them, I'm going to resurface and and paint them. To be honest, I don't think I want them anymore. Has anyone found a wheel tire combination that protects the wheel a little better ? Just askin. Sorry, no hijack intended.

I run 16's on my jk..17's are more money ,about 45 to 60.dollars per tire more..hopes this helps...

X2 on the 17" wheels getting chewed up. I was thinking of getting 16" next tire switch. One would guess that the bigger wheel tires would be cheaper seeing that there is less rubber for a comparable diameter.

I have two sets of 18' -one with 35"'s on it and one set that are powedercoated metallic black for when I'm hitting the highway for a while or need to trailer my meats.

The JK looks tough with 18"s + on them
Tire are more expensive, but its a spoil of war. I love how easy I can clean the mud out, how much breathing room they have and how much people go "damn! they 18's!" I have yet to touch a rim on a rock out wheeling with these "adults" I wheel on all fours.
