Ants

Anyone have a suggestion on what to do about Ants? I have them coming in my kitchen window by the sink. I put out bait traps but I'm not having much luck.

Any suggestions?

We've used that stuff you sprinkle outside on the ground, and it seems to work really well.

Sugar ants of regular ants? If they are sugar ants, bleach down the window sill and set a little bowl there of white vinegar. It should reroute them, then sprinkle the outside perimeter with Ortho Ant Killer.

Ant terror. It's a clear liquid you drop on a little piece of cardboard. It attracts them. They eat it take it back to the home and they die. Great stuff takes a week to work but i use it every year. You can pick it up almost anywhere.

Clean your house. They are only there because you're feeding them.

They work really well !!! however holding down the moths during ball removal has become increasingly more difficult !!

I use to think that too....... (My sister owns the largest privately owned pest control company in Dallas/Ft.Worth) It's more like you have to get rid of the FOOD you have in your house !!!!

Had an ant problem in my laundry room. The dog had been storing her food in there. I sprayed an ortho bug barrier outside and used a general all-purpose cleaner (not bleach) to get the ones inside. I cleaned up the food and I haven't had a problem since.

Ditto, I apply it a bit more than recommended just in case (every 3 instead of every 6 months), but it works very well. Keeps the spiders, ants, etc. out.

Given it is your kitchen, so you probably want something kinda safe... Gin mixed with dishwashing soap kills on contact and is both reasonably safe for pets and kills the chemical trail they're leaving to lead others to whatever food they found. It'll stop them quick.

I forget the mix, but I'm sure the interweb will solve that...it's how we found it to begin with.

About the only good use I have ever found for gin!

Yep, I'll vouch for this stuff as well. Then again, I work for the only supplier of the stuff in the area.

Unfortunately, I have much experience with ants.

I'd be willing to bet that what you have are Argentine ants. They are a huge problem and are spreading all over. Besides food, what mainly draws them in is water.

That said, look for leaky pipes in your house and yard. Try to follow the ants back to their home, usually under something like a slab, stepping stones, anything really. Dig them up if you can. Once dug up, you'll see them carrying small white things. These are larvae. Kill them too. The larvae are also edible.

In the house, I try to go the non-toxic route most of the time so I use a spray bottle full of water and a few squirts of dish soap. Ants breathe through their exoskeleton/skin so the surfactant in the soap suffocates them.

Ashes. Ants HATE ashes, so sprinkle them around.

Caulk the holes you find ants coming into your house through.

Besides being pests to us, Argentine ants are killing off other ant species and some cool critters like Horned Lizards rely on a certain species of ant to survive.

The ONLY good thing about the Argentine ants is they will kill and eat all the termites in your house.

I've had limited success with Terro Ant Bait. They love the stuff but my ant problem is so huge that it's hard to gauge whether it works or not.

I really don't like using pesticide chemicals near where I grow my food, so I don't. I dig them up, spray them with organic bio-degradable soap to kill them and spread ashes all over. I just don't want toxic chemicals in my food.

Sprinkle a little bit of regular table salt where the are coming in. Not sure why but the little bastards hate it.
