JK WRANGLER 4BT DIESEL CONVERSION

Fellow JKOwners we are pleased to inform you that after a many months of designing, engineering and testing we are ready to release our Cummins 4BT Diesel conversion kit for JK Wranglers. This exciting conversion kit is something that many of us have been dreaming about for quite some time. We are teaming up with Kenny from River Raider Off Road to release this kit and perform these conversions at our two facilities. Feel free to contact either Kenny or myself at either our FL or PA locations by e-mail or phone. There will no doubt be many question that everyone will want answered. We will attempt to to answer all your questions in this thread. - Jeff Garland

We are extremely excited to be working with Jeff on this project. His design and attention to detail on this conversion is exactly what the JK world has been waiting for. We have collaborated through out its development and are thrilled with the results. We think many JKOwners will be blown away by the performance, drive ability and economy of this conversion. - Kenny Hauk

Here are some frequently asked questions we have received over the last few months. As more questions come up we will add to this list here in this post.

Q) WHAT ENGINE APPLICATION WILL WORK BEST?
A) BREAD TRUCK 4BT WORKS BEST BUT YOU CAN BUY A LONG BLOCK AND WE CAN HELP SUPPLY PARTS NECESSARY

Q) HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY FOR AN ENGINE ?
A) PRICES VARY BUT A GOOD RUNNING COMPLETE ENGINE CAN BE PURCHASED FOR AROUND $3,000. A REBUILT ENGINE CAN BE PURCHASED COMPLETE FOR AROUND $6,800.

Q) WHAT TYPE OF TRANSMISSIONS CAN I USE WITH KIT?
A) WE RECOMEND THAT YOU USE RAPTOR 700R STAGE 3 FOR AUTOMATIC. FOR MANUAL WE RECOMEND NV4500.

Q) WHAT IS THE COST OF THE TRANSMISSION?
A) RAPTOR 700R STAGE 3 IS APPROX. $2,600 WITH SHIPPING IT COMES WITH TORQUE CONVERTOR. THE NV4500 COST $1,900 BUT ALL COMPONETS NECCESARY TO RUN NV4500 EQUALS AND EXCEEDS PRICE OF THE ADAPTER FOR THE AUTOMATIC APPLICATION. EVEN THOUGH THE COST OF THE NV4500 IS LESS YOU HAVE A CORE CHARGE AND EXTRA PARTS NECCESARY THAT EQUATE TO THE $700 DOLLAR DIFFERENCE MINUS THE ENGINE TO TRANSMISSION ADAPTOR IN KIT FOR AUTOMATIC.

Q) WHAT LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED TO DO THIS CONVERSION?
A) WE HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO MAKE THIS CONVERSION AS SIMPLE AS IT CAN POSSIBLY BE. ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 10 FROM EASY TO
DIFFICULT I WOULD GIVE IT A 5. THE MOST DIFFICULT STEPS OF THE INSTALL ARE REMOVING OLD ENGINE MOUNTS, AND
REPLACING THEM WITH NEW AND THE ALINEMENT OF BELT FOR THE ALTERNATOR AND AC BRACKET ASSEMBLY.

Q) HOW MUCH DO WE CHARGE TO DO THE INSTALL IN OUR SHOP?
A) THE LABOR PORTION OF THE INSTALL IS APPROX $4,000 IN EITHER OUR FLORIDA SHOP OR OUR PENNSYLVANIA INSTALL FACILITY.

Q) HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECIEVE KIT ONCE ORDERED?
A) 4 TO 6 WEEKS.

Q) WHAT IS THE AVERAGE TIME FOR AN INSTALL ONCE COMPONETS AND VEHICLE ARE AT OUR FACILITY?
A) DEPENDING ON THE CUSTOMER'S BUILD SHEET FROM 5 WORKING DAYS TO 10 WORKING DAYS. THIS INCLUDES TESTING AND
TUNING THE VECHILE AFTER INSTALL.

Q) WHAT TYPE OF FUEL ECONOMY SHOULD I EXPECT?
A) DEPENDING ON VEHICLE BUILD SHEET AFTER COMMICATION WITH CUSTOMER WE WILL BE ABLE TO GIVE THAT INFORMATION.
THE AVERAGE IS 27 MPG. ( DEPENDS ON TIRE SIZE, GEAR RATIO, ENGINE MODS, AND DRIVING STYLE)

Q) HOW MANY MILES CAN I EXPECT TO GET OUT OF A 4BT?
A) THE AVERAGE IS 250,000 MILES DEPENDANT ON ENGINE MODS.

Q) CAN A 4BT RUN ALTERNATIVE FUELS?
A) YES 4BT'S LOVE WVO ( WASTE VEGETABLE OIL), SOY OIL, BIO DIESEL.

Q) DO ALL THE FACTORY GAUGES AND EQUIPMENT WORK AFTER CONVERSION?
A) EVERYTHING WORKS AS IT DID BEFORE, EXCEPT CRUISE CONTROL AND WE GENERALLY REMOVE ESP SYSTEM ( CLIENTS CHOICE).

Q) WHERE CAN I ORDER THE CONVERSION KIT?
A) JEFF'S JEEP YARD AND RIVER RAIDER OFFROAD.

Q) WHAT TYPE OF HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE NUMBERS SHOULD I EXPECT WITH A BASE 4BT.
A) THE AVERAGE 4BT MAKES 120 HORSE AND 385 FT/LBS OF TORQUE @ 1900 RPM'S. THE MOTORS THAT WE BUILD ARE 250 HORSE AND
492 FT/LBS OF TORQUE@ 2700 RPM'S ( REMEMBER THE MORE POWER THE LESS ECONOMY).

Q) WILL THE STOCK 4BT BE CAPABLE IN AN OFFROAD ENVIROMENT?
A) EXTREMLY CAPABLE BASED ON THE TORQUE CURVE BEING SO CLOSE TO IDLE. A STOCK 4BT WILL MAKE 225 FT/LBS OF TORQUE AT
1600 RPM'S.

Q) WHAT TYPE OF HIGHWAY SPEEDS CAN I GO WITH MY 4BT?
A) DEPENDING ON GEAR RATIO AND TIRE SIZE, 80 MPH CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH GOOD FUEL ECONOMY.

Why no cruise control?? Can aftermarket cruise be added?

Honestly, I was expecting the total price (with good engine and tranmission) to be around $10k, if I did it myself. But it looks like closer to $20k after all is said and done. I'm not saying that it's not worth it with the longer engine life, cheap fuel (WVO), and fuel economy...not to mention torque. I'm thinking the hemi upgrade might be back on the table now that I know the cost of 4bt conversion.

Yes aftermarket cruise can be added.

Your right Diesel equipped vehicles are more expensive for a reason. The life span, fuel economy and driving performance of the 4BT is vastly different from a Hemi. The complete kit for the 4BT conversion is massive (not all pictured) and has thousands of hours of engineering time invested in just the electrical system alone. With that being said a DIY install can be performed in the $15k range and a professionally "Hey I dropped the keys off and pick it back up" install can be done for around $19k.

9,800 for the kit
6,800 for a rebuilt engine
2,800 for the trans
19,400 grand total.

As mentioned, a used engine could be found for ~3K but the numbers still arent adding up in my heads (it has been a rough day though )

This is awesome. Granted I am a few years away from a swap now, but my wife promised that as long as I didn't trade in for a new Jeep (and I didn't have to go in debt) that I could do the swap.

Interesting that one of the install facilities is in a state (my home state) that it would not pass inspection in.

If someone from PA has RR do the install does it come with free inspections for life and guaranteed to pass inspection every time?

I wish I had the money to do this. It seems like alot of money, but considering I have over 10k in my Jeep now and haven't even touched the engine the 20 k for the project seems cheap.
