Just got word this AM that there is a mandatory closure of the entire Rubicon Trail due to the King Fire, which broke out near Pollock last weekend. The fire is a monster, it blew up from 18k to 70k+ yesterday, and is moving northeast. It was moving in a narrow band an according to the map was already north of Loon Lake.

A large group of us from western Colorado were planning on leaving Saturday AM for Lake Tahoe to run the trail next week. Most of us have cancelled as of this AM. Planned the darn trip for over a year. Really sucks that we had to cancel at the last minute, but we have the local homeowners whose property is at risk, and of course the firefighters whose lives are on the line fighting it.

USFS has the 'Con under its mandatory evacuation order. Aside from being bummed about our trip, if it burns into the trail there'll likely be a long closure due to erosion risk.

Just read they arrested som guy on suspicion of arson.

The ones still going had a plan c, which was four trails south of Tahoe. Turns out they're closed due to a land use lawsuit. They're heading to Dusy Ershim, 265 miles south.

Good news, the Rubicon was reopened today. Trail will close again 10/10 for repairs to Cadillac Hill.
