TSB: 2008-2010 JK Wrangler: Transmission Oil Cooler Lines May Weep Transmission Fluid

SUBJECT:
Extended Warranty -Transmission Oil Cooler Lines May Weep Transmission Fluid At The Hose To Tube Crimp Joints (7 Years or 70,000 Miles Warranty Extension)

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves installing new transmission oil cooler supply & return line assembly.

MODELS:
2008 -2010 (JK) Wrangler
NOTE: This Extended Warranty Bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with 3.8L engine (sales code EGT) and an automatic transmission (sales code DGV) built before March 10, 2010 (MDH0410XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Weeping transmission oil cooler lines at the hose-to-tube crimp joints.

DIAGNOSIS:
If the symptom/condition is experienced proceed to the repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Open the hood
2. Raise the vehicle half way up on a suitable hoist.
3. The transmission oil cooler lines are weeping from the crimp joints
4. Remove the left front wheel and tire.
5. Remove and discard the plastic tie strap on the upper transmission oil cooler line for the oxygen sensor wiring.
6. Place a drain pan under the transmission oil cooler lines to catch any fluid that will drain out after disconnecting the lines from the transmission.
7. Using Special Tool 8875A, disconnect both transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission
8. Using approximately 10 psi of air pressure, carefully blow out the remaining oil from the transmission oil cooler and oil cooler lines.

NOTE: Blowing out all the transmission fluid from the original transmission oil cooler lines will eliminate having to clean oil from under the vehicle by the transmission oil cooler line connections.

Send a message via Yahoo to rob4607

I got the letter today in the mail along with a reimbursement form if you've already fixed it if you did have a leak.

We have had this fixed under warranty on about 30% of our fleet since the JK's came out. It was a problem we learned to look for after one of our '07's blew the line and burned tranny fluid all the way across town and then coasted into our driveway--that was a proud moment. Anyway, it is common on ALL the JK autos--just inspect for it at the tranny cooling lines just below and behind the radiator.

I'm in need of more information on this issue. Does anyone have a copy of this notice? I took the jeep in to get this looked at this morning and was denied warranty on the basis that "it's not leaking enough". I filled a complaint with Chrysler's customer service but I'm not expecting a resolution without an extensive fight. I want to be prepared.
Here is a pic I took last night:

I took my 2009 Rubicon in several months ago after receiving the notice in mail and verifying that they were weeping. I was denied that there was any such problem/bulletin/letter (which I didn't have with me,I live 25 miles from town). I was in because my Jeep is having the stating issues I have read about and I was told that there is no such problem and if it doesn't fail to start for the mechanics there is a $96.00 charge.
I have installed and serviced electronics ,(built police cars and some fire engine work too) for 13 + years and I can guarantee you it was not going to fail for the mechanics! LOL.
It is a sad representation of the Jeep name.

is there a copy or link to an official copy of this recall? I had my 2010 up on the lift yesterday changing the oil and noticed this fluid weep. Was going to call my local dealer and see what they say..... if they say anything. MIght help if I had official proof of a recall in my hand.

This is bull shit. I took my jeep in and they said it wasn't on the recall and if it was, my jeep was over 70k. Is it a 70k extension or stops at 70k? If it was the 30k plus the 70k, then I'd need to be at 100k right?

I took my 2010 in to get the skid plate recall done. When they were finished they said I needed to get it back in before 70k to get the tranny cooler line fixed and it would be done for free. It is getting replaced as we speak. I'll let you all know what the results are.

The letter doesn't matter if your over 70k miles, they tell ya to piss off like they did me.

great exchange with chrysler RE: Transmission Oil Line TSB
11:00:52 AM : : Initial Question/Comment: looking for info on jeep wrangler transmission cooler line TSB.

11:01:02 AM : System: Maria has joined this session!

11:01:02 AM : System: Connected with Maria. Your Reference Number for this chat is x.

11:01:17 AM : Maria: Welcome to Chrysler Web Chat. My name is Maria; I will be assisting you today

11:01:27 AM : Maria: We regret to learn of the problems you are having with your brand new vehicle.

11:01:38 AM : Maria: Can you please provide your VIN, name, address, telephone number and current mileage?

11:01:48 AM : it is a 2008 jeep wrangler. 1Jxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

11:02:08 AM : xxxxx and about 62000 miles

11:02:57 AM : Maria: Thank you for the information. One moment while we look into this.

11:03:52 AM : : transmission oil line is leaking and it should be covered under a TSB, correct?

11:05:17 AM : Maria: No, the repair would not be covered under the TSB. Technical service bulletins are used to assist the mechanic to repair the issue.

11:06:06 AM : : even though this is a known documented issue?

11:07:20 AM : Maria: There is not recall on your vehicle for this matter and I have no information on the transmission cooler lines being an issue for this make or model.

11:07:57 AM : : i know that you probably don't care, but i've been a jeep owner for 13yrs now. my current jeep is burning oil at 1qt/500miles verified by a dealer and now this. i can't believe how little you care about the customer.

11:10:47 AM : Maria: One moment more while we look into this.

11:11:32 AM : : customer satisfaction notification L05.http://www.jeep.com/universal/websel...ce/pdf/L05.pdf

11:12:27 AM : Maria: That recall does not apply to your vehicle.

11:13:01 AM : : my 2008 jeep wrangler with 3.8L engine and automatic transmission?

11:14:05 AM : : "We are recommending the following improvements be performed on some 2008 and 2009 model year
Jeepā Wrangler vehicles equipped with a 3.8L engine and an automatic transmission."

11:14:05 AM : Maria: When was the oil test done on your vehicle?

11:14:15 AM : : a few months ago.

11:14:32 AM : Maria: Which dealer did you take it to?

11:14:40 AM : : dealer stated without tearing engine down, it was probably a warn piston ring which wouldn't be covered under any warranty

11:14:53 AM : ny

11:15:15 AM : .com/

11:15:15 AM : Maria: One moment while we contact them.

11:16:42 AM : : regarding?

11:17:27 AM : Maria: The test they performed on the vehicle.

11:17:52 AM : : for what purpose?

11:18:42 AM : Maria: We need to speak to the dealer about the issue and the repairs it needs.

11:28:34 AM : : Maria, have you had any luck?

11:32:37 AM : Maria: I was unable to speak with Tim but I left him a message about this. Unfortunately at this time due to the time and mileage of the vehicle Chrysler would be unable to assist you with any cost for the repair.

11:33:28 AM : : that is unfortunate. my extended warranty wouldn't cover it either.

11:34:02 AM : Maria: We apologize that the repair is not covered under any warranty.

11:35:02 AM : : i guess i don't understand, especially when the original owner for the 2008 has the lifetime drivetrain warranty.

11:35:31 AM : : it is not fault of yours, but i am just at a loss. this is my third jeep and probably my last.

11:36:57 AM : Maria: Well I am sorry to hear that you will not be purchasing another Jeep. The decision remains the same. Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

11:37:08 AM : no. thanks.

I swapped the factory flexible hose with new trans cooler line. Giant PITA, just let it weep.

This just sucks, because I have an 07 and it's weeping. I really don't want to replace it with another one that will do the same damn thing. I really need to replace it with something braided and better fittings...

I'd let it weep. Or buy a new factory line and get another 50K out of it.

So I called Chrysler directly to ask about this TSB and she couldn't find anything for my 2009. I even gave her the message number. When I mentioned that it said the warranty was extend 7 yrs or to 70,000 miles, she was able to find it. After she verified my VIN, Build date and miles, she said that my Jeep would be covered. So she called the local dealer here and told them I would bringing my Jeep in under this warranty so there would be no issues. I must say Chrysler was much easier to deal with then I was expecting. Anyways my lines were replaced and maybe I'll get another 50,000 miles before weeping again.
