New York State Off-Road Park Project

I have only begun to brush the surface of this monumental task. Through the beginnings of my research efforts over the last few months, I have discovered that there are several states West of the Mississippi River that have one or more state owned ORV parks or recreational areas. California for example has 6 such parks they own and operate. However here, east of the Mississippi River, ORV parks are few and far between. The ones that we do have here are privately owned and can get to be expensive due to insurance and liability issues. What I am proposing is a lower cost option for the Northeast USA.

With all the bad press we in the off-road community get due to those among us that fall in the 10% rule, we have fewer and fewer land and trails open and available to us. Let those of us, who are true enthusiasts, band together to petition the State of New York to repurpose some of the state land and reopen them as an ORV/OHV Recreational area. These parks could be multi use parks that allow for all types of OHVs. The scope of the parks would allow our community to safely and responsibility enjoy what we do.

Todayís off-road community member for the most part is nothing like our fore-fathers. We are responsible stewards of the land that we trek on. We are always trying to preserve what we have for future generations to enjoy as well. Let us band together and show the government that we are not the people that lead to the decisions of land and trail closures.

There is a huge unknown (to the govít) need for safe, LEGAL, OPEN places for us to enjoy our sport and hobby. By the State of New York opening parks like this, it will be a win-win for everyone. The state government will generate more revenue for their budget and the off-road community will get low cost LEGAL, OPEN places to enjoy taking our vehicles off-road.

Here is the link to the online petition:
State owned Off-Road Vehicle Recreational Park Petition

Thank you to all who view and support this project.

every lil bit helps... if nothing else, this will show there is interest in the idea and it would be worth while for the state to open. I also hope it works, but before I take any of it in front of any state legislaters, i have more work to be done. Phase 1- get the word out... Phase 2- research... Phase 3- TBD

I've been trying to get maps of the seasonol roads or forests roads for NY so we can drive legaly. It's turn out to be very hard to find. I find map of forests with the main rds that go thou them but not the service rds. You would think the D.E.C. would want help with keeping the roads open and a eye on things as with all the budget cuts they dont have the money or man power to take care of all that area.

Just signed. Unfortunately NY has the most dysfunctional government so this will be a huge undertaking. And the NYSDEC-lets not even go there. From my experiance with them, they would rather you lose your house to a flood than properly clean out the creek because you might disturb a crawfish.
C'mon everyone-let them hear us coming-votes matter to them.

Signed it for sure! New York State has some of the largest State Parks in the United States. Most of the land does absolutely nothing, but it is blocked to us avid off-roaders. There are some areas that are really useless for anything other than looking at or off-roading. It would be great if they would open it up to us! A few OHV areas would not hurt and might bring more people into the state! As a matter of fact, the entire North East is very much like this. Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine. They all have potentially great areas!

I signed it. It kinda sucks that the North East has not many legal spots. Where I live theres 1000's of acres of forest and open land that have trails going through them but its all private land and illegal. The problem is the liability that comes with this activity. I knew a guy that broke his finger on a motorcycle poker run and sued the organizer because it was held on private land and in America we can sue over that shit. We cant blame people and states for not letting us do stuff because one sour apple spoils it time and time again. NY is a beautiful state (for the most part) and it would be great to see.

yes, I understand that, and thats why i have a plan whether or not this is state, county, local, or privately owned and run... "enter at own risk, the park is not liable for any damage to your vehicle or any bodily injury or loss of life that MAY happen as a result of entering this park and using its trails." Or at least something more legally and better sounding than that covered in a waiver and in the access passes. Also, the park would be set up as a llc (limited liability corporation) to protect the investors/ sponsors.

just a suggestion, but get in touch with Hawaii 4x4 association. They were successful in acquiring land from the State of Hawaii to build an ORV park here on Oahu. They might help you with what they have already created and save time from recreating the wheel so to say!
