My horn isn't working...

I'm trying to fix my horn, but I can't seem to find the issue. So far I have...

- Checked the horn itself - Horn is good
- Checked to make sure the ground wire for the horn has continuity - Good
- Checked to make sure the power wire has continuity to the fuse - Good
- Checked each of the horn switches in the steering wheel work - All four good
- Checked for 12vDC when pressing the horn - Bad

Now I know there something broken between the fuse and the battery and the service manual says there is a horn relay somewhere in there that should be checked. However, it doesn't say where that relay is, nor does is show where it is in the wiring diagram. So my question is, where is this mythical relay located?

P.S. Having to wait 90 seconds between searches sucks.

Relay is built into the fuse box and not serviceable afaik. you did check the fuse right, doubled checked it was the right one? I know it's elementary, but youd be surprised how often that actually happens in a shop when one over complicates it.

Continuity doesn't mean much to me as far as a broken wire diagnosis. Which is Pretty unlikely unless you have varmits. Voltage drop test is much more accurate for wire diag

Complaining on the searching will go away if you donate to the site.

Now assuming you are out of warranty, I'd take that "good" factory horn trigger, and just wire in a new relay rather than replace the TIPM

The fuse (M23) is good, there's just no power getting to the fuse when I press the horn. I forgot to mention that. I'll do a section by section check of the wires Monday since I would have to take it apart somewhere anyways to install a new relay. I'll have to take the airbag and display cluster out again though. Sweet... It had been a long time since I visited this site, so having to donate was new to me.

The fuse is before the relay. Therefore it should have power in and out of the fuse 100% of the time.

Power should only be changing to the actual horn when it is applied, the fuse will have 12v with the horn pressed or not..

have you gone through any deep water recently? I had the horn go out on me but it just came back eventually a couple days later, guess it dried out.

I attached the wiring diagram I am using to check for continuity and voltage. It shows +Bat Terminal -> Electronics (relay?) -> Fuse -> Horn -> Ground. I know I have continuity between the horn and the fuse, so there's no closed relay between the two, and don't have voltage between the positive terminal and the fuse though. I believe I can eliminate the entire loop with the horn switch and connections leading to and from it if I check pins 26 and 27 on C7 for continuity while pressing the horn tomorrow. That will be a lot simpler than taking the instrument cluster and steering wheel apart.

@BBirish I haven't gone through water or mud recently (I hate water!), but I did check the horn by directly connecting it to the battery, that's how I know it works. Besides, I know it has to be a power problem since I'm not getting voltage at the horn when I press the switch.

I promise I'll get a red star next payday!

I'm having the same problem with my horn. The horn itself works (checked my pressing the panic button on the key). I can only assume it's the clockspring. It's easy to get at but expensive and from what I've read it's a common failure.

Had the same exact problem with my JK, took it to the dealer for a recall and told them to fix that (still under warranty). It took them 30 minutes to do the recall and 3 FUCKING days to fix the horn!!! Still don't know what was wrong with it but its working now.
I think he said something about a electronic board of some sort, I was so pissed at the moment that I didn't really care what it was just wanted to get the hell out of there.

My horn quite on me a while back. dealer had to replace the clock spring in the column.

So I am not at all familiar with all the horn talk above (clock spring???) and I have an issue with my horn. It isnt working at all. I removed the horn and went to replace it with another, and once it was hooked up, it worked for a brief second then shut off. The wires are all ok, the fuse is ok, and when I press the horn I can hear the power relay giving power. But, no sound. What gives? Do I have to go to a dealer or is there a way to fix this myself?

I'm way out of warranty.

Did you fix this?

As I found the cable that connects 12v to the horn fuses in my JK shorted and cut, as soon as I repaired it, connected the battery and the horn goes off, then I found the clock spring it's the culprit of the cable fried, strange as the fuses were ok.

Now I have to buy a new clock spring

Mine still isnt fixed. I need to check the cable because as flimsy and junky as it is I wouldnt doubt if its ripped. My fuses look fine. Still need to get around to fixing this...

Everything before the TIPM in the diagram above, is CAN bus communication.

A lot of mysterious things can go wrong there.

I've had two occasions where my horn failed.

First time the TIPM was replaced... Problem fixed.

Second time the clock spring was replaced, problem fixed. Turns out when I left the top down during a rain shower it caused a short of said clock spring.

Both times were easy fixes and covered under warranty

Wow, this is looking endemic. Mine is dead too. I need to test out whether power is making it to the horn, but I guess I'd be just as successful dropping it off at the dealership.

You can get it using this guide: http://www.quadratec.com/Assets/Installation/75675.pdf
But you have to take out the steering shell out first, not pictured in the guide.

The clockspring wasn't the issue for me. After I installed it still no horn! I ended up buying a horn switch and that's what did it. Much cheaper than a clockspring too...
Needless to say I now have a good "used" clockspring for sale if anyone is interested.

Which cable are you talking about? Just the wiring harness to the horn?
