If you didn't need offroad tires and wanted just slightly better, look for somebody selling some Saharah tires and wheels when upgrading
That is if you wanted to replace the rims also. Where you wanting to just replace the tires and reuse your stocker wheels? If you just needed tires there may be many options depending if you want new/used, allterrain/offroad, etc. What exactly where you thinking you would like to have and what price range?
What WTF LOL said is the best way to do it. There is usually one or two people on here looking to sell their old tires, or you can check other forums, craigslist, ebay, etc. to find someone that took theirs off for new rims and tires.
I'm in the same situation, and after doing some research, here's what I found.
You can change your tire size, I've heard of some people going to 285/75R16s on the stock X rims. Personally, I wouldn't take it that far, that can lead to problems out on the trail, with too much sidewall, etc.
I'm getting ready to change my 225s out for 265/75R16s. But always check with the tire manufacturer for recommended rim widths.
A good, a.k.a. caring and competent, tire shop should be able to point you in the right direction as well.
Check out different tire manufacturers and tire sites online, one in particular will also point you to 'Recommended Installers'.
As a side note, the stock tires do appear pretty wimpy, but check out this vid.
Not bad, all things considered, kind of warms the heart.

Too much sidewall ??!! You can never have too much sidewall on the trail. That's what gives you the ability to go with low air pressure. I ran 315/75R16 and I could safely go to 10/12 lbs on a 9000 lb rig and get good bite everywhere. Lighten the load to a JK weight and go to 10 lbs ... life is good! With bead lockers you could probably take the 285s to 7/8 lbs! :mr-t:
Check your local tire stores, alot of times they get lightly used tires from people upgrading and sell them very cheap.
For future reference, do what I did, and make the dealer put them on for you. They'll do anything to get a sale, like throw in a set of 31X10.50 BFG KO's on steelies, if it garantees them a sale.
Like someone else here suggested, hit your local tire stores looking for used take offs. I just scored a set of 265/70r16 goodyears (used) for 184. Then they ended up giving me $100 for the minivan tires that were on my X. So i ended up paying $84 mounted, balanced out the door. It's still not a great off road tire but it sure beats the stockers.
location helps on this topic. West coast tends to have allot more support for modifications. Here is New England it's pretty hard to find anybody doing modifications. Heck it's hard to find any JK jeeps here. They are out there but not many.
I just bought four new Rubi tires (BFG Mud Terrain 255 5 17) for $450 delivered. This is cheaper than I've seen used sets go for on that other forum. PM me if you want the sellers info. He also had a variety of other sizes and brands at similar discounts.
This topic has helped me out also...my JK will be coming with the base 16's also. Here's a noob question: once you increase the diameter with larger tires I'm assuming (I know...I know) that the spedo will need adjustment?
Yes, larger diameter tires will throw the speedo off. Your dealer can flash the computer to compensate for larger tires.
