View Full Version : Fastest you've ever been in control?

The other day I hit 209mph over the ground in an EC-130 and realized that I beat my previous speed on a GSXR1000 of 172mph.

What's the fastest you've gone in/on something you were controlling?
(so obviously the 737 you went 500mph doesn't count...unless YOU were controlling it.)
:D

~150 on my tweaked;) turbo yamaha. This was back in the mid 80's when the only factory turbo bikes were the Kawi and my Seca. Mine would run mid 12's out of the crate.

176mph in the Viper---

I was still in 5th gear (its a 6 speed) at 5500 rpm--- redline is 6200 (if I remember correctly)- still plenty to go, just ran outta road!

168mph in the ZO6 Corvette-- this was all she had, and was a handful to drive.

The Viper still had some left-- factory rated at 192mph. And the faster you went, the smoother and more planted/stable the car was-- much different than the Vette.

I had both of these cars at the same time till about 5 years ago I sold them--- both to the same guy!:smokin:

I dont drive like that anymore- I am old now:bawling::thefinger: (and wiser:grinpimp:)

That is funny, I was just going to reply to this thread...168 is exactly what my top speed in my Evo was.

5 spd, 400 hp at the wheels. I also ran out of road, I can't remember now, but I think I had something like 750-1,000 rpm left.

i piped and jetted my buddies 2000 yamaha R1 and saw 182 on the test ride. i imagine it was around 175 for the true speed. i had a 2000 yamaha R6 and was getting 172 out of it on the speedo but there was about a seven mph gain on the top end speeds. now that i live in the mountains i'll never need that kind of speed again. i live about 20 minutes from Deals Gap aka "Tail of the Dragon". it's like a small piece of heaven.

I used to drive 160+ on bikes all the time (last street bike was a Hayabusa). Due to a back injury, foot injury and various other minor things and dependents I get my kicks driving at 2 MPH over rocks now :thefinger:

yeah, i've had a couple of spills on the rockets. you just never seem to heal 100%. then you add a new baby girl to the picture and super sport bikes seem to be a little too close to death. besides, it's much better for me to share my off road experiences with the wife and kiddo. i still ride bikes just not the one's that have 16,000 rpm red lines.

my firend used to have 2000ish camaro, bought it used it was a trade, this car was the fastest thing ive ever been in, we have no idea what was done to it but it had to major internal motor work, and to make it even better the owner was a crazy mother fkr who drove like he was being chased (which WAS alot of the time)

168 in a quater mile in a 92 Mustang on 11" slicks and 3" skinnies up front. 347 Crawford aluminum motor, TFS tricked heads with Vortech J trim blower. Talk about a handful to drive! For the fist 2 seconds all you saw was sky for the other 6 you were just praying it would stop on the other end. Fun times! Man the money I spent on that car...

Well into 220mph on a Mr. Turbo ZX-11... INSANE.
Many many times to 200 on a WERA GSXR 1100 (1340 Yoshi Big Poppa Motor)

My Viper in the 165-170 range.. Probably one of the scariest experiences at speed

My 993 Cabriolet prepped by Dave White Racing... right about 170

My best friends Electric Blue Lamborghini Diablo.. 190 ish.. in the rain across Alligator Alley... he was in the passenger seat.. hyperventilating.

And by far, the scariest experience at speed in my entire life, though I was not in control, was 140mph in a MTI Super Cat offshore boat... Nothing will ever top that unless I get to drive/pilot it next time. ;)

Speed doesn't really scare me at all, as long as I am one at the controls... make me a passenger and I will weep like a school girl.

I've been 120mph in my moms 1993 Chevy Blazer 4dr w/ 4.3L Vortec V6...

Had my 2003 Chevy Malibu maxxed out at 107mph the first day that I got it..

And I've had the JK to 95mph..

Someone mentioned a JK. With 37s and lots of wheeling when I take mine much past 75 and it’s more scary than a bike at 160 :bawling:

I can’t imagine going much faster than 160 on a bike like some of you guys. I get tunnel vision at about 150 so at 200 it must be insane!

well if were talking scary and slow i once had my old YJ (4" RE lift 2" body lift, 33's, small block chevy, 3 spd auto) goin about 115 racing a mustang (chick was asking for it) it was funny passing her , but i was scared ****less, that thing was a shaky rust bucket.

I'm guessing at least 100 in my '93 XJ. The needle was past straight down and the numbers end at 85 at about the 4 o'clock pos on the speedo. The rear started wanting to wiggle and I chickened out. Funny thing is that the rest of the traffic wasn't going that much slower than I was!

The other guys that have gone over 160 will most likely agree with me here---

150 mph is pretty easy and alot of cars and bikes will do that (hell my BMW 545i did 161mph)

But you start going faster than that and its a whole new ball game. There is some 'faith' involved. You are taking your chances that nothing will go wrong- things can go real bad, real fast at those speeds. Hoping nothing will pull/walk out in front of you. Coyote, rabbit, dirt bike, etc. Also--- a road that you THINK is smooth and flat might be big rollers or jumps at 160-190mph! You really need a long and flat stretch to get those speeds. I know a few places around here that are flat and smooth (from experience).

When riding my last bike- ZX11 Ninja (175mph) I found that I would slow my breathing and relax my body and think about any small parts sticking out and try to make myself more part of the bike- tucking everything in as much as possible. Hold it wide open for as long as you dare and hope for the best!

I kinda looked at it like this Hundy..

Up to 110 I knew from personal experience that if I went down I could survive.. severely injured (I saw my own femur), but live. All of this taking into account you are protecting yourself with the proper equipment

From 110 to say 130... you are talking more injury than anyone should ever have to endure... if you survive.

130 to 150... most likely gonna die.. probably slow and painful witnessing and feeling it all.

150 and beyond, and at this speed we are not just talking motorcycles, you are gonna die and probably rather quickly.

So its only scary until you get beyond 150... after that you aren't gonna know much anyway. :)

Years ago I was on a 900RR with my speed addicted g/f on the back.. we got it up to about 160+ on I-75 in Tampa in the wee hours of the morning...
I let off gradually to slow down... at 130-140 it felt like we were doing 60, a common experience.. but my g/f didn't realize we were still well over 130 and reached her arm back to adjust her pony tail. The wind ripped her arm back pulling all her muscles which acted like a wing and sent my bike exit stage left just grazing the concrete divider. It would have been real ugly had we come off along that wall. She was black and blue from her elbow up her arm and across her chest.

She didn't ride much after that and I think her the knuckles on her left hand lightly drug on the ground when she walked for a while.

Did over 160 in an Infiniti G35. Took it to 137 around a 28 degree banked turn....let go of the steering wheel (at the pro's suggestion). It does involve a good amount of faith.

160'ish in my '74 Formula Firebird..
Once was at 3 am in soup thick fog...which is good since by the time the cop could turn around I had "disappeared"
Then I started to value my life more and my driver's license. LOL

Now on a track/ controled environment... that would be cool.... No Fear!

That’s what I tried to describe as tunnel vision, it’s weird. Slightly slower but still in the “mode”, I would often (daily) do 120-140 on my commute to/from work in London, when I lived there. That’s like Long Island type traffic. This was in the 80s and I’d pass between two cars (literally between them not in my own lane) all the time at 120+.

England has lots of very narrow twisty country lanes with rises that you can’t see over. We’d take those suckers at 140 to get a wheeie over the crest. By the grace of the being I don’t believe in, a farmer pulling a trailer of hay or some guy turning right could have killed me many times over.

I forgot, I also did about 155-160 in a stock car at the Richard Petty Driving experience. The banked turn comment reminded me. I didn't let go of the whell but it is cool going into a hard turn at that speed. :D

My buddy and I were going from our Atlanta office up to Maryville, and we decided to take my brand new (at the time) Rubicon through Deals Gap. I wasn't used to that tall of a vehicle yet, and it seemed like the rocks were going to hit the roof at every corner. The banking combined with the rock outcroppings was a bit un-nerving. The shoulder tread blocks on the BFG MTs were still nice and new and sharp so they howled loudly in the corners. That was a total blast.

My crazy friend forgot to mention that he gets car sick, so he was a little green when we got to the lookout at the top.

Cant wait to go back sometime with my dad so we can take his classic Minis out there! They are about 1/2 the size of the BMW Minis. :D

OOPS! Thread-jacked and forgot to get back on topic. Skydiving, found the governor on a 2002 Dodge Intrepid at 106 and thought I ran out of gas until it dropped a few MPH :pissed:, 115 in a Malibu Maxx SS (ran out of road), 105 in my friends Z06 at Woodfield Mall in Chicago (kicked the crap out of some kid in the WRX that wanted to race). There was WAY too much traffic to go any faster.

Now I own a jeep. All hopes of going >85 are shot.:shaking: Now I get my thrills at 3MPH.

I know the feeling. The second car was a newer tiburon supercharged and I attempted the cell phone picture but I couldnt even press the buttons on the phone I was so glued on the road... it wasnt nearly as fast though, 120-130 at best. I was still in stock suspension and the carbonfiber hood was starting to bounce around a lot.
