Has anyone had problems shifting from 1st to 2nd....I've tried shifting at different RPM's, speeds etc. it's a 50/50 chance that it will shift smoothly, the other gears are fine. Any thoughts????

Still under warranty? I'd take it to the dealer. Mine likes to pop out of third after a shift from time to time, pisses me off.

First and second have triple cone synchronizers, hence they are more complex and more prone to have alignment issues resulting in hard shift....In some cases the "hard" shift might disappear after a while (5.000 miles)....
I has to be stated that with triple cones, one has to shift quite fast.. don't go too slow, as this will allow the input shaft to coast down too much..and makes the synchro to work much harder..

My 6 shooter works pretty good, except its a little reticent about going into REVERSE....the forward gears are smooth as butter.

Ditto. Third can pop out on occasion, but all others smooth as silk.

I have ~9000 miles and I have the issue where the shift from first to second sometimes catches, it won't go in smooth, generally when it is cold but not all the time. I have no issues with 3 and above or reverse.

Should I be going back to the dealer??

There is also an inner shift boot, that can cause difficult shifts, especially when it's cold.

One thing I learned many years ago is in order to make your shift into reverse easier, if you shift into say first gear first and them over to reverse it slides right in....became second nature to me always worked well. Course when I bought this jeep, it was my first auto in 20 some odd years and I miss my standard...unless I'm sittin in traffic

Yes, i've had a lot of problems with 1st and 2nd. Took mine to the dealer and take a guess what they said..... 'We can't duplicate the problem'. Well of course you can't! You probably drove it for about one mile and didn't do any driving with it at all! pisses me off

I had no problem until I read this post the first time! lst to 2nd IS a bit notchy. And reverse can be a treasure hunt. Still better than an H Farmall tho.

I have the same mileage, the same problem, and the same question... Should I return to the dealer?? I haven't checked the fine print, but I would assume this would be covered by my unlimited mileage lifetime powertrain warranty. I haven't added a lift or the 35s yet, but that was definitely in the plan. Anyone know if Jeep will honor warranties on powertrain if the suspension has been modified?

ive had 0 issues on my 6sp.

i read more complaints with 6sp with a body lift.

it's the 6sp. I don't really mind it being a little "notchy" during the 1-2 shift, I'm just wondering if it's going to keep getting worse, or if there are any known issues that the dealer would be aware of?

mine pops out of 1st and 3rd on occassion but I'm convinced it's the boot getting caught on the daystar panel not allowing it to fully engage. If I focus on shifting it never happens but when I'm in stop and go traffic it happens since I loose my mind on idiot drivers and don't pay attention.

How many miles? Mine was kinda tight when brand new but has loosened up considerably after 50k.

all mine are smooth except 3rd, which is odd. like someone else said, kinda notchy going in, some resistance. i really have to have the clutch floored otherwise, it'll grind. i hate to admit it but i've ground it three times.

Once it warms up it's fine.

Ive had mine pop out of 1st and 3rd on many occasions. My problem was when I purchased(used) the shifter inner and outer boots had been torn. I replaced the outer boot with the bezel from jeep for 35.00. I did not change the inner and sometimes it gets out of alignment. You can actual feel when its not sitting right. It feels like resistance against the shifter. I take and slap mine around abit in the neutral position and it realigns. Then I can shift without issues. You can actual feel it if you put it in first and slightly move your hand off the shifter and behind it towards second gear position. BE CAREFUL that you dont have your fingers there. Use only like the palm of your hand. It will smack the crap out of your hand if it flies out. BUt try it and notice that as you let the clutch out and pressure is applied that the shifter does naturally feel like its moving towards second. Thats just the torque on the tranny. When the boot is in the correct location it will just barely move. When its not it will pop out and sound and feel like you just got rearended. Scared the crap out of me the first time. I was about to jump out and have some words with someone at a stop sign. Then I realized I was the only vehicle at the stop sign. Good luck hope the info helps.

Same here...6 degrees the other morning...like rowing through a lake of molasses...seemed to smooth out right around the time I pulled into work. No issues otherwise.

Double clutching helps when really cold or in low range and down shifting.

I got 26k miles and have had 1st to 2nd trouble since day one. most of the time its me. i found if you over rev 1st, like when youre pulling out in traffic,
2nd is harder to get. worse when cold.

if i'm taking my time and shift quick out of first it goes smooth, the owners manual shows the speeds to shift at they work pretty good.

i found two tricks that work for me

1 if the road is close to flat i start in 2nd gear and slip the clutch

2 if the road is steep i start in 1st and rev it out and shift right to 3rd.

i think it's just the way the trans works, 1st and 2nd are very close in ratio which makes the shift tricky to make.

i don't know squat about the tranny just my idea and experience and observation. but i never felt like it was a fault that chrysler woud be able to fix on my jeep, yours may be different.

i do drive a semi truck so shifting without a clutch and knowing wheel speed vs trans gear speed is something i do on a regular basis.
i can shift my jk without the clutch if i'm carefull but don't like to, drove my cj 4spd for 3 years with out using the clutch no prob.
