Just returned from the Rubicon today. My first wheelin' trip of the season. We were there for a club run with maybe 150 rigs, which ran in four groups. With that many rigs on the trail, it took seven hours to run a loop from Loon Lake, down Wentworth Springs and back to camp, with a 1/2 hour lunch break.

The trail was in pristine condition thanks to the cleaning power of the snow run-off and the hard work of organizations dedicated to maintaining the Rubicon Trail. Thank you, thank you :).

The temps were around 70* during the day and down to 40* early in the morning. My kind of weather. Patches of snow/ice in the trees all around and at the higher elevations. Small streams everywhere from run-off. Minimal trail dust which is always a good thing.

The club did an excellent job of barricading sections of trail that were still too wet. The route was challanging and fun. Nothing hardcore that would cause unnecessary delays. There were plenty of delays as it was.

Lots of very cool custom wheelers. I saw one that was a buget build like no other. This guy picked up a Postal Service Jeep for $700.00 and a 4wheel drive Toyota Pickup for about the same price and built a Toyota powered Jeep. He welded the spider gears at the rear diff so he is full time locked and open in front. He found a sport cage for free and modified it. The rest of his mods he either found off the side of some road, like a piece a steel he used for a dash panel and part of the floor board, or the front flat fenders he made out of 18 gauge sheet metal. Most everything else was a home depot special. The rear fender flares were made from plastic baseboard coving. Roof rack made from plywood and 2X4s. Cooler rack made from plywood and angle iron. He made doors out of plywood and some water pipe insulation. Paint troughout by rattle can. This Teep weighed next to nothing and went everywhere that the group went for a $3000.00 investment. I thought it was the coolest thing. Here are some pics.

I Like It.

Here's another guy out there who I felt bad for because he was givin some very bad information regarding the capabilities of his vehicle. He is a 70 year old , handicapped man who enjoys the outdoors and trails very much. He asked a trusted friend if his Nissan Truck could make the trail and was told it could. He was warned by club members not to go but the man persisted and was allowed to go. Major fail by the club in my opinion.
He broke a front axle and who knows what else and was dragged out by club members. The man took it all in stride. I just felt bad for him.

Sounds like a great time Rob. I'm jealous! I'm itching to get out and haven't had a chance yet. Hoping to do an evening run into the first crossing on Fordyce next week. The creek is impassable at over 500 cfs and all the runoff on top of that. Did you guys run into much snow on the trail?

Hey Nate,

Yes, it was nice to finally get out and wheel a little bit. No snow on the loop that we ran , just some patches of snow in the trees. We are looking forward to Fordyce later in the year. I'd like to wheel a little more before I destroy the JK at Fordyce.

That was a great read, and some really nice pics. Hard to even imagine how cool it would be to run the Rubicon. The terrain and the scenery make me feel very envious.

Rob,

Wow, I cannot WAIT to hit the Rubicon! Your recap, has me even more motivated to get together with everyone for a trip in late summer!

I'm sorry I missed your call today, but I was on a conference call. Actually, I have some "interesting" information to share with you regarding your question. Give me a buzz tomorrow, and we'll connect.

Talk soon.

Looks like a blast!!

I really need to make the time for a roadtrip down there. I would love to run that trail with a few local members at some point.
