: Giant Rock Rattlesnake cyn run 6-14 pics
100dollarman 06-15-2008, 10:07 AM Had a GREAT run yesterday!!!
SDMF, socalrubi, WOODS, Hundy, BILLY and all our crew headed out at 9am and didnt get bck to base camp till 9:30pm! Then SDMF and socalrubi drove home! So it was a good long day of wheelin'. I think we covered about 130 miles.
Headed to the butte in JV, to Buffalo springs (where we played with a Rattlesnake!), to the bomb holes at Means drylake, to the sand dunes and cyns of the Sledgehammer area. We did the first section of the "Jackhammer" trail. GNARLY!!! there is a waterfall there that is insane! My camera was being a ***** all day so I dont have many good shots- hopefully the guys will post up some pics. From JH we hit the big sand dunes which were a BLAST!!!. Then headed towards Giant Rock. On the way we played on a very tall hairy dune where the SC Rubi kicked ass!!!:thefinger: Then over to Giant Rock for some lunch. Then to the Integretron (weird alien building), then up to Pioneere Town for some cool sodas.:bounce:
Shot over to the top of Rattlesnake cyn and down towards the desert with a side trip into the top secret "Hundy" cyn and the imfamous waterfall there. I was totally impressed with everyones Rubicons and the drivers cajones!!! Every one made it. AWESOME! My TJ friends cannot make it.
What a Fantastic day! We had a good crew yesterday:bounce: Thanks to everyone who showed up! It was great meeting Socalrubi (Richard and Melissa).
I didnt get alot of great pics, but hopefully the others will post some.
:thefinger::thefinger::thefinger:

venom 06-15-2008, 02:07 PM beautiful little female speckled rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchelli)!
that first exhaust tip/rear bumper mod looks exactly like my first mod at Katemcy rocks :D
and then the pic with the bumper corner folded looks like my 2nd k-rocks mod, the rock rash on the rim looks familiar too:laughing:
that looks like an incredible set of trails
so whats the deal with the space station thing? Observatory?
someday I'll have to make the trek out from Texas and play out there!
Heres a few pics. I was having too much fun at the dunes and didn't take any pics. I know Woods shot some video, hopefully he puts it up on youtube.

sweet, cool vids! Thanks for taking the time to put them up.
The first one was about the 4th time I tried to make it up that ledge and I was trying to bump it up - but it looks like I ended up way too heavy on the throttle. I'm lucky I didn't break something with that wheel hop.
by the way, this ledge really shows what you can do in a stock rubi, awesome man!

YmansJK 06-19-2008, 08:36 AM 35's and 4" lift will do. You guys where right by it. within 100 yards
beer:30 06-19-2008, 11:27 AM its cool to see jeeps on all the trails i grew up riding.

Yeah, we drove right by it, but not everyone in our group was built up for it.

You are correct in the pics are not Cougar Buttes. But CB is actually closer to the Hundy Compound! CB is about 10miles away, and Sledge is about 25miles. But there is some cool rockcrawlin at CB too! We'll have to do a trip there when it cools down a bit.
Funny Cougar Buttes story-
Way back in the first week I got the Rubi (Dec 06 before any mods) we took it out to CB. There was a rockcrawl competition and lots of jeeps, etc out there. I spotted 4 or 5 TJs, CJs, Yj in a line 4x4 'n. So I followed with them for awhile until they came to a waterfall none of them could dlimb- I asked them to move out the way a bit- they were all snickering kinda like "yeah, right" like that new 4 door "notaJeep" is going to have a chance! Well I pulled up to it, locked font and rear, and proceeded to just about tear my front bumper off because it was so steep. They were trying to tell me to back down. Anyone who knows me knows that I dont give up THAT easy! Well up and over I went. That was probably the first time any of those guys had seen a new JK. Probably a few of them are owners by now!
But the best part was the 'leader' of their pack's 9 yr old (guessing) little girl, while everyone is out of their Jeeps watching, yells REALLY loud "DADDY-- THAT RUBICON MADE IT EASY AND YOU COULDNT MAKE IT!"
haha! I like all Jeeps, but that day was the first of many that showed the 'non-believers' what the JK is capable of.
just a little story by HUNDY...
Valiant 06-19-2008, 05:58 PM Had a GREAT run yesterday!!!
:thefinger::thefinger::thefinger:
Thanks Hundy for the killer weekend!!! All carnage aside, It was great to wheel with you guys again. It was cool to see what your Rubi's could do. even straight out of the box they are great 4X4s. I'll wheel with any of you any time! And as always I'll bring the Hi-lift.
Billy
so_calif_rubi 06-19-2008, 06:04 PM oh my god ,Hundy that is a cool story, thats just like i felt when i climbed that water fall place you showed us. i felt very good inside and was proud of my jk.
Valiant 06-19-2008, 06:13 PM Good video for such a small camera. must be a good one though. I really apreciate you guys helping me try to get up Hundys hidin waterfall. Thats some off-road dedication right there. I was sooo impressed that Richard made it up that. Those Rubi's are Awesome!
so_calif_rubi 06-19-2008, 06:17 PM Hey Billy! Welcome to the site! :D I hope we get to wheel with you again soon. You totally impressed us with your driving and your little Toyota. :bounce:

Valiant 06-19-2008, 06:46 PM And Thank you Richard and Mellisa for the friendly welcome. Last tuesday i got paid to wheel around your area a little. There is a cell site i did work at near the Vista Grande ranger station. I had to meet with a city inspector at 8am to have my work signed off but he called and said he'd be there around 2pm so i wheeled around till then. beautiful area you guys live in. Even caught and released a huge gopher snake, Hope to see you soon. Billy
Hey Billy, It was cool meeting you. I can honestly say I have never seen a person pick up a rattlesnake in the wild, you got a huge set of cajones!
100dollarman 06-19-2008, 07:23 PM Hey Billy- welcome to the forum:thefinger:
You can come wheelin' with us anytime!!!
Valiant 06-19-2008, 07:39 PM Nice meeting you too Jason. Your jeep is pretty insane! Let me know where and when...I'll be there.
Cheers:beer:
Valiant 06-19-2008, 07:44 PM I need to find a new off-road shop. i called 4wheel parts in burbank to talk about lockers and the guy said if i only do it on the weekends i dont really need em. then he said all i need are better tires.
i hung up on him
:shaking:
so_calif_rubi 06-19-2008, 08:23 PM LOL Billy...maybe that guy works part time at Radio Shack or McDonalds lol....he obviously doesn't know the kind of trails we do. And what does that mean, anyway...serious 4X4ing only goes on Mon-Fri?? Richard said to try All Pro Off Road on Palm Ave in Hemet. Here's there web site www.allprooffroad.com I know it's not close to you, but they are Toyota specialists. Or maybe 4West in Colton.
We love it up here. It's soooo beautiful and when it was 110 down the hill today it was only in the high 90s up here :grinpimp: I haven't seen any snakes around here yet. :O( I also think that was so cool when you picked up that rattler....you were like the Crock Hunter!
We're really looking forward to Gold Mtn and John Bull on the 28th. You're coming, right?? :D
Hope to see you soon!

That guy was obviously a moron. Everyone can benefit from a locker, imho. It would be awesome to get a locker in the rear.
As for runs...John Bull may be a bit rough on your truck, you'd screw the rockers all up. what do you think Mark?
so_calif_rubi 06-19-2008, 08:52 PM ive never done JB but iam hearing peeps are doing it with out locker, not sure about sliders,(but with a good spotter) ? i got a freind with a lifted Toyota pu who wants to fellow us up JB,i told him he'll get lots of damaged to rockers ,he may not go now ,but he may go as far as he can when turn back.or what ever ?
do a quick search on "john bull trail" on youtube. :grinpimp:

100dollarman 06-19-2008, 09:17 PM JB would be tough for Billy...but he's a STUD! I say 'lunchbox' locker in the rear and some 33" tires.
A Jeep on 33s and no lockers will have a tough time. 35s are better. Jeep with 33s and lockers is still a challenge. But do-able.
JB is funny, too... in that sometimes its easy/tougher. Hopefuly it'll be on the tougher side!!!:bounce:

Dont give up the locale!
You know, I did the same thing when I got home. Browsed around on google earth until I found it and put a push pin in it.
MarcM 06-21-2008, 04:40 PM That looks like it was a great time. One of these days when I do not have to work 16 hours on a Saturday, I can meet up with you guys.

I want to go really bad but if its as bad as jackhammer then i shouldn't. I'm going to put a lock-right in this week and that will help. I think with a locker in the rear i should be able to follow Richards line. I was reading John Bull TR's on the "early broncos" board and they say their trying to get permission to make JB HARDER...WTF. And the Youtube videos are deceiving too. I saw stock Jeeps cruising right through easy sections and built rigs trying to get over boulders the size of VW Bugs. So I think i can do it with a spotter. I don't mind rocker damage and I'd rather get winched up a really tough section than damage my drive train but if it turns into a constant team effort to get me through it it won't be fun for any of us. They say it's the toughest trail in Big bear so it's got me a little nervous.
Cheers

Billy- I am glad to hear you are getting a lock-rite. It'll make a world of difference. Dont listen to the guys who say dont do it.:thefinger: I think it is your wisest purchase! I think next should a a small lift, some trimming if needed, and some 33"s. Gears?
Valiant 06-22-2008, 10:01 PM Yeah true, those things will help but i need to try and maintain a balance between daily driver and capable wheeler. I was reading about changing gears in the t-case instead of the diff. that sounds alot better. i do alot of long distance driving. What do you think of just changing the 4 lo gears?
100dollarman 06-22-2008, 10:06 PM Hey B-- I have a email notice that you posted on the 100$ thread earlier today, but it is not on the thread. Did you delete? Or is it there? It was about the 3 axle CJ7.

Yeah i think so. somebody asked what it was so i thought id reply but i dont really know how to work these boards. this is my first time.
Woods 06-22-2008, 10:21 PM Cool shot of the waterfall!
Dont give up the locale!
RU kidding me? I'm going to start offering tours. I figure it's worth $100 a trip. I figure once in the creek bed, that I can blind fold them and have them get to the waterfall by brail. ;)
Valiant 06-23-2008, 10:01 AM Well I got my locker today. Only $250. not bad. I know I could put it in myself but they only charge $250 to put it in so I went with that. The kid behind the counter said he did JB AND Holcomb in a stock YJ with open diffs and 31" tires and didn't have to many problems once he got past the gatekeeper. He said he dented his oil pan, thats it. I can't wait to do this run. Do we know that it's open?

Yes, they are open. Congrats on the locker.:beer:
