Hello to other Oregon JK owners as well as other jeep owners. I just thought I would start a thread for Oregon. I know of just two of us that are on here now. Are there any others that are signed up on JKowners.com?
I'm here, but my JK is a company vehicle.

So you get to go out and trash, I mean test your companies products on your company vehicle? Cool!
There are getting to be alot of JK's up in your area, not very many down here. I have only talked to one other in this area and we are hoping to get together for some wheeling when I get healed up. Tell then it will just be bench racing. Glad to see you on this site.
They are getting alot of JK's up here, they are all over. You can actually go to Dick Hannah in Vancouver now and buy a Warrior Edition JK right off the lot.

What is so getto and bling about protecting the corners and sides of your Jeep? It's not my color, but I would take the diamond plate in black. The rack isn't getto, that's called carrying more stuff. You boys need to go back to school and figure out what is bling/getto and what is useful on a jeep:shaking::D

No way would I trade, sorry. That area is so crowded now. Way to many people for me. I like it here. I grew up here and will more then likely die here. Not in the Eugene Springfield area, but hopefully on the East side of the mountains.

Well that friendlyness is starting to go away because there are so many transplants that want it to be like where they came from instead leaving it alone and just fitting in. East of the mountains away from Bend and Sunriver is great. Very sllooowww paced there. That is where we are going to move hopefully in the next year or two. Come on up, but remember leave all that Florida, New York stuff there.:D and I will buy you a  What area are you thinking of moving to? I'm in Springfield which is the gateway to the Mckenzie River rec. area. and the Mid. Cascades. I can be in the mountains in an hour. Mountains as in 8000 foot and up. Of the two cities here, Eugene and Springfield, Eugene is a tree hugging city and Springfield is the Redneck city. I can almost hit Eugene with a rock from where I live in Springfield and they are like worlds apart in personality. They are huggy kissy and we are hang them down on main street. :D Let me know if you have any questions about Oregon and I will try to answer them for you. Send me a PM anytime. The "Floridian" in me will be gone the second I cross the FL/GA border. I was born in small town USA, and have no interest in changing people to see things my way. I am absolutely done with listening to Joey and Vinny saying "Well that's how we do it up north!"
As far as where to live, that is still in the works.

Wow it's been 4 months and no one else has posted. Are there no JK's in Oregon anymore?
After 14 months of being laid up I finally got to off road my JK. It was great! The only complaints are no low end grunt and the gearing is way to tall. Having to run 2000rpm's with 4.10's is a little to fast for trying to stay clear of stumps and trees on slippery trails. I am used to having a rig you could step out and walk faster then your Jeep. If I did it with my JK I would have to jog. The only time I felt like it was slow enough was on level ground. What I did learn was that my starter works really well.:D Other then needing lower gearing I found the JK a great rig. I now need to think of getting gearing put in it or finding a way to get some low end torque out of that V6.
We went up into the TSF to play. Great sunny day and 70 degrees. Man it was great to finally get to off road after so many months. rupe

Went out last weekend and played in the Christmas valley sand dunes. The JK was great out where you could keep the rpm's above 3000rpm. It climbed everything but the most steep ones. Even the quads with the paddle tires were having a hard time making it up those. This coming Saturday we are going to clean the Noonday trail from all the fallen tree left over from the winter storms. Of course I just get to haul some of the equipment and then stand around and watch. It sucks being laid up.

'07JKfan and I (and Mrs. Rupe) went to the Pasiley area and found a run that took us 8 hours to go 67 miles. It was pretty rough most of the way, but not a hard run. Saw wild horses and pronghorns. Great run we came out at Christmas Valley about an hour after dark. We then had to drive back to the Summer Lake Hot Springs where we had a house rented for the weekend. Great 4th of July weekend. We tried to wheel down into Hole In The Ground, but it got to narrow after about 200 yards, so we had to turn around and come out which was a pretty good trick. Had to do one of those E brake, clutch, gas things while doing a 6 or 7 point turn around. It's a long way to the bottom if you do it wrong.
Got back and the tires I ordered had come in so I got those put on. BFG Mud Terrain KM's, got them from American tire for $120. each. For that price I even got a spare. I stayed with the stock 255 75R17's (32x10.50). Sure looks alot better then those things they call all terrain Goodyear's. Now I need to go try them out. Maybe going to TSF again on the 20th. (July) and do somemore wheeling up there now that I have good tires.

Didn't make it to TSF due to life getting in the way of fun. So we are planing a trip back over to the Christmas Valley area again over the first full weekend in Sept. Try out the new trailer as do some wheelin in the area.

Hey there! I was wondering what happen to the moving to Oregon thing. I hope things go well for you. Even if it doesn't that shouldn't stop you from moving to Oregon.
Yes things are going very well. Not enough $$$ to due the things I want to do to the Jeep yet, but things are looking up. I think I'm just going tohave to buy parts slowly and then in one big woosh get it all put in or on or what ever.
We had a great time last weekend over in the Fort Rock/CV area. Found a fun trail, I guess I would rate it at about a 3 in some areas but mostly 2. But it was still fun. It was really cold, down to 22 degrees one night. It was nice and warm during the day though. It was a great time. We all need to get together and wheel together one of these days.

Here's an idea of where to take a jeep. I don't quite have my JK yet, but that should be happening in the next month or so.
These are a few pics of what I want to do with the JK when I get it. I want seriously wide tires for the JK because I don't want it to be less capable than my cherokee is now. I'm still waiting, but no reason to just sit around in the mean time. My son and I took it out Sunday afternoon (2-8-09), on the 2041 forest road in Oregon. We went miles further than where the last vehicle before us had given up. We turned around because of time commitments, not inability to continue.
Here's the first shot, still at lower elevation. I've had this cherokee for about 18 years. It has been set up for deep snow for the last 10 years. These are Dick Cepek 30x12.50 FC tires.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3491/3265848812_730dd53565.jpg
The snow was pretty soft in some places. I ended up going down to 7 psi on this trip. I have taken it as low as 3 psi on other trips.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3358/3265853900_95d4d497b1.jpg
In one spot we dug a hole to see how deep the snow was. Here it was about 32 inches.:D My son jumped in to prove that he has less than a 32 inch inseam.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3371/3265047681_61ab4cd7f7.jpg
Here's a look at how soft the tires look when back on solid ground:

One of these days I want to ride my motorcycle through there. It looks like a neat area.
I love wheeling in deep snow because it allows access to areas where no one else can drive, and is easy on your jeep if you do it right. After quite a few years of experimenting, my recipe is wide tires, low tire pressure, and keeping it slow and gentle. I'm hoping to put 33x15.50 tires on the JK shortly after I get it. That should make up for it being heavier than my cherokee.

JK weighs more then a cherokee? I had a 01 cherokee sport, that was a damn good 4x4.The wife and I put about 100k miles on it virtually trouble free. The 4l six was bullit proof it seemed.CJ is a good area, but a lot of roads are closed off, those damn yellow gates,or large dirt barriers etc.My brother and I had a motorcycle shop here for years,we closed it down about two years ago.We just wrenched and built harleys.I am soooo glad to be out of that business now.

It doesn't look like people post here very often, and waiting longer may not be beneficial to get information. My wife and I will be RV'ing in the Hell's Canyon area on or about August 10, 2009. We have a 2009 Wrangler X that we tow with us, and I would like to make some nice off-road scenery tours. I am not "up to speed" on off-roading laws in the Northwest, and would like to get some information from you guys. I do not want to encroach onto private property or tear up the natural beauty...I just want to absorb the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Our trip will entail time in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon. We will be there for about 3 weeks. Thanks in advance for any information you care to share.

Around the Hells Canyon area, there is a lot of dirt roads, some pretty difficult. A lot of the area is either national forest, indian res. or private. In august, it is really hot and the fire danger is high. You may have some limits on where you can go because of that. I suggest going to McCall idaho and Burgdorf Hot Springs while your there. The Alvord desert and the Steens range have great trails too, and may still be open to motor vehicles in 2009, in 2010 I doubt it will be.

One thing that I know is fun in the area is to look on a map for fire lookout tower locations, and drive to those. The view is always very impressive. I would also suggest going through Joseph and taking a look at the Eagle Cap Wilderness. I loved this sign they had put up in town:

WOW 2 of you huh? My son just moved to bend (well sunriver) and keeps trying to get me to bring the jk up for some fun. I was reading further back in this post about people airing down way low and driving on top of the snow??? How well does that work with the JK? I dont have a winch so I would want some one to go with to try it.:smokin:

That was me :)
I have tried the same thing with my JK, and it works pretty well. Do make sure you have another rig with you, and a good shovel just in case.
Check this thread for more detail on a JK snow trip:

I have put on some wider tires now, so I can't wait to play in the white stuff some more.

They have maps avaiable and trip reports online to review. At the end of this Summer we made another run. This time from Walla Walla to Oregon-Nevada boarder all offroad. We did not follow the maps after Johnday area, sort of did or own thing.

john's peak is one of my local favorite places to ride!
have you posted any pics of your run?
I may be doing something on the OBCDR this spring/early summer, how many days did you take to do it? and were you pushing along or just lazily puttering?
Sorry for all the questions at once i'm really looking forward to this run! the scenery is freakin amazing!
any details you would like to share are greatly appreciated:beer:

I haven't posted any pics, we did take lots but just have them on the laptop. The first time we made the run from California to Washington on the OBDR we took two weeks to do it. We did lots of detours and sightseeing along the way. This last time we went from Washington to Nevada in one week. and sort of made our own route after we got to the John Day area.
The OBDR is fantastic and we will make the run again.
