Depends on what you want to spend. I have always like the Winchester 1894, but they can be expensive. I have a newer model 94 carbine that I like to walk around with when exploring the desert. I like 30-30. You cant get them new anymore from Winchester, but there are plenty of used ones out there for a couple of hundred bucks. The pre 1964 model 1894 rifles and carbines can be in the thousands based on condition, caliber and fatory options. My humble collection consists of a 1894 rifle (top picture) in 30 WCF (30-30) with a custom stock/wood, take down, octagon barrel. According to the serial #, it was manufactured in 1896.

The second one down is the post '64 model 94 30-30 carbine. My walking gun.

the one below that is a Winchester 1894 Saddle Ring carbine in .25-35 WCF. It was made in 1926 and has a repair made on the stock, but still in good condition.

Marlin also makes a good lever action rifle, if you wanted to go new.

Hundy, I will have to take you up on the offer one of these days. Do you shoot on your "compound?"

I have never really taken pics of my guns before, but it sounds like fun-

Here is one of my favs- 1939 german Luger. My dad (he's 75) just handed it down to me, and it will def go to my son or grandson when I get old.

Thx. I dont know what that means, but I say no. I got a couple boxes of ammo (I should ck the brand- boxes are plain), a booklet that is in german/english, and thats it. It does say 1939 on it, but I really dont know anything else about it.

Dustoff '68

Proof marks are something like these from the Nazi era...it's a small stamp...could be located almost anywhere...barrel, trigger guard, grip frame, etc...

Sounds like a commercial and not a military version. The military versions have an inspection mark (proof) on them that consists of a swastika held by an eagle, like this one on a K98:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Karabiner-98k-nazi-eagle.jpg

They usualy increase the value of a weapon if they are intact because a lot of them had the Nazi proof's scratched or dinged out after the war. Same with Japanese WW2 proofs (the Crysanthimum.) Any marking of Imperial Japan was destroyed.

Lugers are cool either way.

Dustoff '68
06-07-2008, 03:25 PM
Commercial models also have proof marks...just not the swastika or eagle type indicating military versions...

Grrrr Nazi proofmarks are a sore subject with me
One of my dumbest moves I did as a teenager, I had a 9mm Hi-Power manufactured by FN during the time Belgium was Nazi occupied and had the eagle/swastika proofs.
I decided I really wanted a trampoline and took the mint 9mm and sold it for $350 so I could buy my damn trampoline......
needless to say, the local gun shop was quite happy to make that deal:pissed::pissed::pissed:

Hind sight is 20-20, aint it?! I did a trade, but it was for the better. I traded an Ibanez Roadstar II bass guitar and amp for a Winchester model 94 carbine. Did it in a pawn shop before the laws got so strict. Still have it and it is one of my favorites.

Line #33 means it is a Simson & Company manufactured Luger for the Nazi military...

Line #45 means it's a Mauser proof, and the smaller one is on the barrel...yes?

Here's an additional page...see what you are referring to??

I just found the charts online with some explanation...

it also has either a stamp number 4. or 28. on the bottom side of the barrel. I dont see the smaller eagle there, but there is a smudge.

Thank you, sir. I will keep that in mind. I kind of like to keep my firearms in the condition I got them in, provided that they are in good operating condition. My SAA is in need of some TLC, though. I would be leery of shooting it right now (if I could even find the ammo) since there is a little too much play in the cylinder from side to side.

EVERYBODY should have a G19...perfect size for carry...probably the best all around carry gun on the market...me...I just wanted the same size, but in a 45 caliber format...the G38 suits me fine...and punches a bigger hole:smokin:

I like my HK P2000SK for carrying around. It is small, almost too small. In fact, my pinkie is useless if I am shooting with only one hand. Mine is 9mm because that is the only authorized caliber. If that was not an issue, I would have got it in 40 S&W. My ideal cc pistol is a H&K P7M8, but they are too expensive.

I bought the .22 kit for my glock 21. As long as you feed it cheap remington "golden bullets" I think they are called it runs pretty good. It is picky about ammo.

That it is...one of a handfull of photogs who has taken handgun photography to a fine art...what amazes me about him is that he is a sociologist, I think, and the impression I get is that he does this (photography) as a hobby.

You know what they say....if it's not a Walther, it's just another copy...or was that Colt....or is it Glock??? :thefinger:

I think there are maybe 3-4 "completely original" guns that were designed from scratch. and even the glock is not one of them :thefinger:

Personally I like the Henry .44 Lever action octagonal barrel.

And effective, 300 meter (the longest we could shoot) 95% hits on silhouettes with LC M855 at 11:45PM firing from cover on a very dark cloudy windy rainy night, a tornado actually touched down around 10 miles away and took the roof off a church.
The Gen III D-760 6X rocks!
And with the new custom QD mount, it can go back to day use very quickly.

Indeed that would be a sore subject for anyone. Have you priced a mint 9mm HP lately with all that yours had proofwise? Don't it'll hurt your feelings all over. :smokin:

new mags from H&K (.40 cal / 10mm). don't know if they make the curved ones anymore. the gun itself is a vector MP5K clone.

as for the "boating accident", that's a running joke for people that post their guns on the internet...so the govt. doesn't come get them.

edwin, those are some real nice setups man.
