OCTOBER 24th-25th (and camping Friday 23rd for those who can)
Fordyce Creek Trail - Eagle Lakes trailhead to Meadow Lake

I think we have a pretty good size group that want to run Fordyce this month. The water flow will be down, so it will be a great time to run the trail. In another couple of weeks Fordyce Lake will be almost empty (for their dam repairs) and the flow will be below 50cfs.

How does the weekend of the 24th and 25th sound to everyone?? I could do the 17th and 18th too, but Brooke wouldn't be able to come.

I'd like to run the trail all the way through and do all the winch hills. My thoughts are to wheel in an hour or so Friday night for those who are able to camp over Friday night and the rest can meet us at camp Saturday morning. And then Saturday wheel the rest of the trail and camp at Meadow Lake or somewhere along the way if we want to take more time. Sunday we can play on some of the winch hills at the top of the trail (or finish running the trail) and then head for home.

Just some ideas ... I'm open to suggestions. Who's in?

Either weekend works for me, though the 24/25th is my 3 day weekend where I have Moday off. It makes it nice to have a day to unpack. I am also game on leaving Friday if I put in for vacation. I'm easy so we'll see where the consensus takes us.

I'll let Rob post up here first (he MAY have a story to share). All I can say is ... he's earned every picture you have Hundy!!

I met up with them Saturday night at Meadow Lake after they ran the trail trail from the Eagle Lakes trailhead. Sunday we went back through the upper winch hills and out committee crossing through a new section of trail they built last year. It was a bit tight for an unlimited in places, but a fun climb.

I forgot to grab my camera this morning, so it will be tonight or tomorrow before I get my pics downloaded. I'm not sure how many my daughter even took???

Man, I've been exhausted all week. The Job has kicked my butt this week and the unscheduled bay bridge closure has made my commute a nightmare. My pics aren't that good. I'll post what I have later. Darin and Dave sent a couple pics. Lets just say that Fordyce is not JK friendly but the JK is capable of handling the trail. 40s and D60s would be nice. And as usual, I pay the price because I can't drive. :shaking:

P.S. Nate, I could use some tips on packing the JK. You seem to have everything you need and still have a back seat.:dustin:

HERE'S MY WRITEUP:

We went wheelin. Bad things happened. We went home. Pics to follow.

OK, I'll do a little better than that.

Darin, Chris and I drove up friday night and camped at Eagle Lakes. On the way in we tried a few different lines at driveline hill which was cool. I need rock lights. Dave, Kendall and Ivy the wonder dog met us saturday morning at camp. We were on the trail by 9:30 am. Our intent was to wheel from Eagle Lakes to Meadow Lake which is about ten miles and five winch hills. This was my first time doing this and I don't remember the entire trail so I'll do the best I can.

The trail from Eagle Lakes past the first two water crossings is not too difficult. It's all downhill to the creek. A couple of off camber locations that feel worse than they are and some decent rock crawling. Once past the second or third crossing, I don't know which, the trail starts to climb again. Dave and I had trouble where we came into some good size axle grabbers. I chose a line that put my driverside close to the granite. I knew I was close but decided to keep going. Just then, my passenger side came up and rolled the driver side into the granite, dammaging the B pillar at the roof line. Bad things. After awhile the trail levels off again and we came across a work crew building a bypass around a big mud hole. We appreciate their hard work. We make it to winch hill one. It's filled with large rocks and deep hole, leading up to a waterfall at the top. There was one huge rock, about 3/4 up, that gave Dave and I trouble. We both winched off of it. The waterfall at the top was not much trouble. Winch hill two was not bad because I don't remember it. We had lunch at commitee crossing before heading up to winch three.

There's alot going on, on the trail up to winch hill three. Some good squeezes between the granite that'll take your fenders off or worse, tight turns throught the trees, some steep hill climbs and some large boulders to get a long wheel base JK on 37s hungup. There is a location on a hill climb where a huge tree root and some boulders create a shelf that is very challanging. I normally take the easy bypass here but this time I decide to try the easier right line as the left line is all tree root and tall. My setup would never make it. It took some wheel spin to get up but I made it. A proud moment for me. No pics but I have witnesses.

Winch hill three is a nasty v-notch where rigs roll. About this time I was tired and just wanted to get to meadow. I wasn't going to try the notch but I like to hang around a watch rigs go through. Some drunk dude was shouting to me, to run the notch. I told him I wanted to do the tougher bypass. The bypass here is not that easy. Just ask Chris. :D Dave and I made it because we are bada$$. We didn't stay around to watch Darin " allegedly" make the v-notch.

On our way to winch hill four, there is a fallen tree that has to be driven around. I don't know exactly what happened but as Dave was watching me almost clip my passenger quarter panel, he took his driver side mirror off which also dented his door. Life was sucking for dave at this piont so in an effort to make him feel better, I flopped my rig on winch hill four. He got a good laugh out of that one. So did Darin and Chris for that matter. That's what we do for each other. We help each other out. So it wasn't like I did anything stupid. I was helping a fellow jeeper out.

OK, the truth of the matter was that winch hill four has some huge boulders on the way to a squeeze between a tree and some granite at the top. At the top was a group of drunken, stoned , toyota guys. Maybe seven or eight guys. I know they were toyota guys because they kept telling me that and when I got up to where they were at. One guy shoved a joint in my face. I can't prove it but I beleive they placed a big rock at the squeeze that would grab my rear axle. They told me to hammer through it. I even tried it but it wasn't happening. Imagine all the guys talking at once, telling me how I should drive through it. After several tries, I wanted to back up and try a different line but with Dave,Chris and Darin right behind and these guys constantly in my ear, I became impatient and decied to scale the granite on the passenger side and get through. Everything was going good until I went over. Bad things. The guys were all to accomidating to push me over and allow me to drive off the granite. I went back and thanked them for pushing me back over. They said" no problem we wouldn't do anything to f-up your sh--".

Don't remember winch hill five. Still thinking about winch hill four. Made it to meadow lake and Nate, Kelsie and Brooke met us at camp. The wind at camp began to pick up and my tent mocked me by rolling over. Later Darin told stories of my bad behavior on the trail, on past wheeling trips. Good times.

The next day, Dave took the road out from meadow lake and Nate joined us on the trail out to cisco grove. Crushed the driver rear quarterpanel when the fender flare folded from the inside out on a boulder at one of the granite squeezes. And when I came out of the water a commitee crossing a guy noticed my driver rear tire was tracking funny. Turned out that the nut worked off the bolt, holding the upper rear link to the axle bracket. The bracket was broken on one side at the weld on the axle. The bushing was gone and the bolt was hanging on the one side of the bracket. Bent the sway bar link. Chris had a bushing that we modified to work and another jeeper gave me a nut that worked. We hammered the bracket back in place the best we could and put it back together. I made it home that way.

No regrets. Fordyce is awesome. I'd run it again. I'll post what I have for pics.

Great pics, and thanks for the right up Rubirobv. I'm shocked to see there was so little water on the committe crossing. I guess that's why you ran into a noob by himself on the trail, low water crossings seem to let everyone in!!

I'm shocked to see there was so little water on the committe crossing.

That's the lowest I've ever seen it! With the water that low, it gave you a good chance to see where the holes are.
