So I took my wife and 10 week old, out to the Great Sand Dunes this past week and wanted to go back over Medano pass. Always heard it was a nice drive, nothing crazy...About 1/2 mile from the pass coming from the Dunes, a nice sink hole which must have just happened either late the previous night or earlier in the morning because we came upon a very stuck XJ. He said he had lockers but his front passenger wheel was in good, so good I thought his axle might get ripped off from pulling him out. Either fortunately or unfortunately, I wasnt able to pull him using a tow strap. But luckily, a nice CJ7 came along with a Ramsey who was able to pull him out while also using a come-along on the drivers side to keep the XJ from rolling. After we got him out, it looks like there is a small spring a couple feet deep which must have eroded the ground causing the sinkhole.

The CJ7 then tried crossing, but wasn't able to make it, but another truck coming from the other side was able to let him hook his winch on the trailer hitch so the CJ was then out. I thought I would be able to make it no problem....Nope, I think had the spotter gotten me over another 8 inches on the passenger side, I would have been able to make it. I was locked and in 4low and my front drivers wheel just sunk. The CJ was able to winch me out no problems. I felt like a total ass knowing my Warn 9.5ti is sitting on my workbench in my garage:(

I am planning on getting a generic winch plate from Harbor Freight and cutting out the OEM bumper and calling it good. I saw someone, somewhere had done this. Oh yeah, I still need to install the extended brake lines.

and dont worry, my wife took our son out of the Jeep.

I have never posted pics, so here's my first stab at it.

sorry, this is the only pic I have with the OME HD Long Travel installed. Tires are Cooper Discoverer STT 295/70/17.

Pics don't appear, or at least not on my screen.

Kinda anxious to see this sink hole, did you get pics of it?

yeah, i see pics aren't coming through... I'm working on it.
I'm actually a bit surprised that even with the lockers I was not able to get out of the hole by myself.

only damage was the airdam was ripped off...AGAIN. I keep putting it back on thinking it is helping with my 20mpg fuel economy.

That’s one of the “to do with the wife on our own because it’s easy trails”. Funny how those are the trails I seem to end up stuck on vs. the harder trails that I somehow manage to walk through. It’s called wheeling wife karma or something.

Dump the air dam, it will keep getting pulled off and with that lift I doubt it will do anything to MPG. LOL, with 37s and 5.13 gears I’m getting 14 MPG unless I drive like an old woman.

BTW all the trails seem very wet and muddy this spring with all this rain we have been having

LOL, that was exactly what i told her too. with the hole, the trail is no longer a 2 or 3 rated trail. But now she sees why I have a winch and why I need to install it.

Those situations are always helpful when it comes to modding the rig or adding "Jeep Jewelry" as she calls it.

It’s also helpful to point out and show her other people’s problems if you need some type of new “Jeep Jewelry”. “Honey, it’s for our safety”, has worked for me in the past multiple times :innocent:

This thread is a perfect example for those of you that need to persuade the wench that you need a winch

oh yes, the pass has probably been clear for a long time now. I dont think we saw any snow except way up high.

I took my air dam off and didn't notice any difference in fuel economy. I'd just get rid of it.

So I took my wife and 10 week old, out to the Great Sand Dunes this past week and wanted to go back over Medano pass.

Cool, did you get any Sand Dune pics? I imagine dunes would be a blast to wheel.

I ran that pass a few years ago. The wife and I had a great time. Medano Pass was our first run in Colorado. We then spent the next two weeks wheeling all over the state.

Thanks for the pics. It looked like fun!

Reminds me of why I hate mud. I'll take a rock garden any day of the week.

I imagine they would be, but since it is a National Park...no wheeling. I'm ok with that, I dont need sand everywhere.
